Default Is there a road

Thinking of driving down to Punta Cana from Sosua. Seems I heard about a new road that goes the other way (vis Samana) to PC. Is this true or is it the 8 hour nightmare of a long distance drive through Santo Domingo? Any help appreciated.

Yes, but you don't have to go all the way to Samaná. Drive east until you get past Nagua and turn right onto the new toll highway which takes you to the south coast near Las Américas airport. There you turn left and follow your nose until Punta Cana via San Pedro, which can be bypassed, and La Romana and Higuey, which can't.

It's still quite a long drive but at least you avoid having to go through Santo Domingo.

From Samana/Nagua/Santo Domingo crossroad it's about 1 hour 30 to 45 minutes easy drive. There is a portion of about 15 kms of many MANY blind curves uphill and downhill where you cannot go fast, and if you "meet" some truck in your lane... better pull over and have a fria...(agua fria, that is). You will end up at SD airport. From there, it's 40 minutes to San Pedro, 30 minutes to La Romana, 50 minutes to Higuey, 45 minutes to 1 hour to Bavaro, plus 20-30 minutes for SP/LRM/HY crossing. Total: 4 hour 45 minutes (minimum) to 5.5 hours, not including rest-stops. Plus time from Sosua to Samana highway.

so add 2-2.5 hours from Sosua-Nagua, Also they are widening the road from Nagua toward the new highway so you may get stuck in traffic for another half hour or so during the day.
