Default Is a passport required for entry?

My husband (Canadian) and I are leaving for Punta Cana next week.
After checking our passports, we noticed that his has expired.
Is a valid drivers license with a birth certificate all that is required for entry?
I was told this, but want to confirm.
Thank you.

Thumbs up Is a passport required for entry?

He will be ok with drivers license and birth certificate, it might come in handy to have another picture id.

Default travel documentation

Laurie,

Yes, a Drivers License with picture and an ORIGINAL Birth Certificate are acceptable ID. The Birth Certificate doesn't have to be the one issued at birth, but must have a notarized raised seal on it.

According to the Dominican Embassy web site a "notarized affadavit of citizenship" is acceptable with official picture ID as well.

I had been refused my tickets on one trip to the DR because the ticket clerk at the airport insisted that I didn't have an ORIGINAL Birth cert. She was wrong, it was a copy from the State of Massachusetts with raised seals. Happily the airline agreed with me over the phone and we flew the next day. Enjoy!

The DR really doesn't care too much, they want your business. You have to have "proof" of citizenship that will satisfy your home country when you return. Now that can get serious if the INS is feeling ****y that day.

BTW, you 'expired" Canadian passport is proff of citizenship....

And can certainly serve as a picture ID...

The airline rules are all that count. Get by them, and you are in, because their rules are at least as strict as that of the destination country, lest they be levied huge fines for passengers turned away. Check with your airline. If you can't get on the plane, everything else is mute.

I agree that a passport is the way to go.Last month on our trip to the DR ,they were really giving me the treatment on my daughters birth certificate. Then they give me a form asking for her S.S.#.Like I would remember that for a 6 year old.I only use it once a year at tax time. Its all I can do to remember mine.I thought I was going to miss the plane.Needless to say,I applied for her passport the day we returned.
