I have been reading a lot about people bringing gifts to give the maids/other staff at resorts.

So do you really think the maid would rather have left for her each day...

1) $1 and small gifts (shampoo, nail polish, clothes, what have you)

or

2) $2/$3

I would think they would rather have the extra money, but since I have never been I really don't know. Are these things really that expesive for them to buy there that is is better to bring gifts?

Just curious and what would the staff at the hotel really want if gifts is the better choice?

Personally, I would tip a little more ($2-$3) rather than lug gifts. Leave behind the unused portion of your shampoo for the cleaning staff, but make sure you leave a note saying that they have it with your permission, otherwise the hotel will not let them keep it. Light up a little boy's life by bringing a couple of MLBaseball hats and giving them to some young boys you see. It'll be worth every penny.
