Question A smooth evening in Puerto Plata

I am going to spend one night only in Puerto Plata or Sosua two places I don't know very well and I am looking for a nice sandy beach hotel with some privacy , a good restaurant all reasonnably priced and some tips about where to find a traditionnal dominican disco. This will be for a one on one romantic night.
Please help !

Check out Villa Chessa in Sosua. Quite but by the Casino and Playa Chicita. 35 bux a night with real nice breakfast included. Disco High Carribean is 1/2 mile away and there are nice restaurants all over the place.

Costambar, Costambar Guest House and the Car Wash.

Hope this helps.

Default Parada Alex

If you are looking for unique night life?

I do not know if you will have a companion, hopefully Dominican. If you do have Dominican friends you may want to check out a local dive like "Parada Alex".

Last time I was in sosua I went there. It is an open air bar, not much to write home about, but it is true to "local life". When I was there, I was shocked to see bats flying and swooping overhead. Comming from Miami, I had never even seen a live bat except in the zoo.

I felt safe there but had three Domincan companions with me. I would have never gone there alone.

It is just outside of Sosua on the way to PP.

Sosua bythe Sea is very nice and right on the sea and is an attractive hotel and very reasonable. It is one of the few hotels with a beach in Sosua (they share it with Casa Marina). It is right in town and walking distance to everything. The dining room is good and they offer a fantastic buffet breakfast

Just to add a bit. jazzcom suggested villa chessa. It is a long way out and only handy to the casino. Playa Chiquita is a lousy beach avoided by locals as well it should be, it is rough and only about 30 metres wide.Certainly not a beach worth going to. In Sosua, Laroca is a good restaurant on the main street with an extensive menu both Dominican and International. To sample real Dominican atmosphere and dining the most recommended place by residents is Restaurant Central in Charamicos the less developed area of Sosua. It is a mom and pop operation popular with both ex-Pats and Dominicans alike.Taxi will cost you about 50 pesos each way but well worth it.

I guess it is a matter of taste. If you want a small quiet beach for a romantic time Playa Chiquita is real nice. Not full of people and very quiet. I only see a few people there every time I go which is often. Water is rougher than the Main beach but this place is clean and quiet and maybe more suitable for romance.

Villa Chessa is quiet with NO motoconchos nor fruit vendors on loudspeakers with a lovely pool, a great breakfast and wonderful lanscaped property. It isn't close to anything but it is private and QUIET compared to downtown Sosua which I would give a plug nickle for as far as staying there. It is only a couple of minutes by either car, taxi or motorconcho to all the NOISE. All I hear is constant horns, motorcycles and loudspeakers on trucks selling stuff.

If you go to LaRocca try to get the LOCAL menu so you don't pay the higher price that they charge to tourists. I think that they call it the "CLUB" menu. Personally the food is just ok there and nothing special in my opinion. Actually the food isn't that great at all in Sosua so if you are looking for cullinary delight you are in the wrong place.

This Hotel is as close to the "happening" disco "High Carribean" as any other Hotel in Sosua. Just farther away from all the tourist traps, Hooker bars and Noise.

Or try Confressi or Costambar on the other side of Puerto Plata. Nice areas both.

Obviously jazzcom has never been to Sosua by the Sea, it is very quiet far from noisy conchos and hookers are not allowed. The club menu at LaRoca is absolutely reserved for locals and is different from theregular menu.I strongly disagree with him about Playa Chiquita I lived 50 metres from this little inlet for a year using it for a dip almost every day and in no way can it be compared to Playa Sosua or the Casa Marina and SBTS beach. As for dining, if you want to sample Dominican cooking which can be a delight go to Restaurant Central in Charamicos it is a great Dominican experience.

Default I'm with Montessorian

For a disco, I love Parada Alex...a friend of my husband's owns it. The music is great, you don't have to scream above the noise, and you will find all Dominicans/no hookers there, unlike many places in Sosua. The hookers hang out at any tourist bar (sorry Jazz, High Caribe is a great disco, but it's full of hookers), and this is not one of them.

For a hotel, I always go to Condos Dominicano, which is very reasonably priced, and you couldn't ask for more. Excellent hosts, impeccably clean, fully-equipped condos for I think $30 US/night. However, it is not "on" the beach, if that's what you are looking for. Sosua by the Sea is a better choice if that is a strict requirement.

Restaurants - El Torro is a nice steak house, but a little pricey; if you would like Dominican food, I agree, the best is Cafe Central in Charamicos, which is not too far from Parada Alex. If you don't want to spend the taxi money, take a guagua from the main highway for about 5 pesos each way...get a real taste of the Dominican.

Good luck!

Dont have to be sorry. He wanted to go with a woman I think to a Disco so Hookers wouldnt have bothered him.

The Steakhouse is ok.
