I am taveling to DR in July and wondering how much it will cost me to go from the airport in Santo Domingo to Higuey? Would it be cheaper to rent a car and drive? I'm looking to get to Punta Cana. BC

I'm sure there's publicos and guaguas going there which are very cheap, you may also want to check out Metro Bus or Caribe Tours. Perhaps someone else from the forum knows about bus/publico service?

Artic, Rafael is quoting you the "taxi tour" rate. If all you want is transport, not a guide, then at that rate, you'd be paying a stiff premium for convenience. If you can afford the time and 250-300 pesos (about US$20 max) to get to a bus terminal in Santo Domingo (probably Star Bus, if you're headed toward Bavaro), then from there you probably can get a bus from there to Bavaro for a couple hundred pesos.
Has anyone out there had experience trying this? I know the buses from SD to Santiago, PP and Jarabacoa well, and they're great. Not so familiar with the Capital-East corridor though...

Hello Keith,

there are two buses a day leaving at 7.00 am and at 4.00 pm from Santo Domingo to Bavaro. Price is RD$120 (US$6.50). Any cab driver at the airport knows where the terminal is in Santo Domingo.
