SUPPORTING AUTHORITATIVE GLOBAL EVIDENCE
What is "alarming" is the closed-mindedness of the pretentiously intelligent respondents. I will not venture to discuss the level of illiteracy in certain "developed" countries but only encourage the readers to view the following excerpt of a global authority:
"In summary, the TB epidemic today is actually several different epidemics throughout the world. There are hot spots of MDR-TB where MDR-TB levels are above 5%. These include several countries of the former USSR, but also the Dominican Republic and Cote d’Ivoire, and the areas in these countries where MDR-TB has reached these levels must be considered as international public health emergencies."

Thank you for not considering our level of literacy, or lack thereof.
Would you, perchance, have an specific link to this stament in the WHO website? Furthermore, a quote is not a reference, and it cannot be considered sufficient proof of your original statement. But I am sure you know that.

Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland
DISANTO
Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland has been director or WHO for over 4 years, and a World Class Physician in her own right. I would think you could sustain your argument?

Even though DISANTO went beyond his limit of expertise in forecasting the effects of an abnormally high incidence of MDR-TB in the Dominican Republic, he does validly point out the ONE study that alerts us to a possible resurgence of a drug resistant strain of TB.

Apparently, what DISANTO does not understand is that the report states that 41% of TB cases in the D.R. are drug resistant to at least one drug (of the 4 out there), and that DOES NOT mean 41% of the population. Also if you understood how TB is spread and transmitted you have to be exposed over prolonged periods of time, e.g. a teacher in a classroom with several students who have TB... Tourist are not exposed to confined areas for long periods of time... so tourism should not be affected by such a report.
Here in Virginia, Fairfax County has a large percent of TB Cases, compared to other counties in D.C., MD, and VA. [In fact there are several people in my neighborhood with TB], and none are Dominican. Of the population infected only a small number are drug resistant. Your statement of third world countries is also full of ****, not too long ago there was a case where a man from England came to Fairfax county and was hospitalized with Drug Resistant TB....know don't tell me that England is a "3rd world" country?
So DISANTO, I am not quite sure what point you are trying to make with your statements, other than provoke conversation. Take your stupidity somewhere else.

Addendum to HB's post
Yes, the reason that TB becomes multidrug resistance is that patients do not complete their treatment. For TB the treatment is for 6 to 12 months depending on the med/meds used, and whether the patient is HIV positive or negative. They used to say that if you missed even one day, you had to start the regimen over. I don't know if this still holds true.
This applies to lots of antibiotic use in the US right now, too.
BTW: TB treatment in the US is free if the case is reported.

How are these people becoming aware. I read the internet every day for all the news my mind can handle and have never run across even the slightest reference to this bs.
Where are these increasing numbers of people reading this crap other than from you?
What a load of camel dung!

DISANTO: Since I barely skimmed the lenghty report form the WHO, would you do me a favor and post these numbers: as a percentage of the total population, what is the incidence of TB and of MDR-TB in the Dominican Republic? how do these ratios compare to the rest of the world?.....the numbers i've seen so far only relate the percentage of MDR-TB to all TB.....
thanks in advance,
mondongo
Edited to ask: does anyone have any more info on the TB article that appeared on the DR1 News today?
