Default Upcoming trip to POP/reunion

We're leaving next Saturday (13 July) for four weeks in POP. Anyone from Puerto Plata who wants to meet up and hang out would be cool. We'll working be at the Iglesia Cristiana Evangelica doing construction. We're staying with a local pastor and family behind Harrison's near Playa Dorada.

Also, any "must-see's" for that area while we are there? We might rent a car to go off on our own for 2-3 days. Let me know, DR1!

You might spend a day in Sosua it's only about a twenty minute drive and has a great beach. Then, go another 10 kilometres and you'll be in Cabarete a great windsurfing centre. Have dinner at LaCasita on the beach, it's very good. If you keep going you'll go through Gaspar Hernandez a busy little town, then go on to Rio San Juan and check out the Gris-Gris Lagoon. Another few miles and you have Playa Grande, a beach that will knock your eyes out. It's a nice place to enjoy a Dominican lunch on the beach. Enjoy yourself and congratulations on your contribution.

As you are going to be right behind Harrison's, you should get into Cafe Cito to meet all the local Ex-Pats!! Check all that you are told 3 or 4 times to verify the information though!!!

If you play golf (or get to the stage where you are concerned about information you are getting) , give me a call - you'll find me in the local telephone book. Samana (3 hours away eastwards) is also a good area but going in land towards Santiago will certainly show you the real pleasures of the DR - meeting the local camposinos! You might like Monte Cristi, La Isabela etc for the historical interests of the DR.

Best luck & enjoy your stay here - Grahame Bush.

As usual Grahame is right on track. Here is a short day trip you may enjoy. If you follow the highway through Sosúa and then through Cabarete, about five miles further you will come to an intersection (Sabaneta) where there are usually a few motoconchos and gua-guas assembled. Stay right and within a couple of miles you will start going up what locals call Moca Mountain. The road is narrow; it twists, turns, dips and goes through several hamlets. Stay on your own side, it can be dangerous, take your time enjoying the scenery; you can stop periodically for a cervesa or coca cola at a colmado. You may find the children's smiles are a little wider out here in the campo, the waves a little friendlier. After about an hour of climbing (give or take twenty minutes) you will come to some speed bumps at a police station. Less than a mile further you will come to a restaurant (the name I don't know), there was another, el Molino, but last I heard it was closed. From here there is a beautiful vista of the Cibao Valley, green and lush.To the left you can see Moca, where as the story goes, the home of beautiful women and brave men. It is also the home of many motoconchos working in Sosúa. To the right is Santiago, the second largest city in the DR. If you follow the road down the mountain and stay right to go through Santiago, keep on going and you will come out at the highway back to Puero Plata. It has been a few years since I did this little tour but it has stayed in my mind as a favorite day trip. You may enjoy it too.

Default thanks

Thanks, guys, for the info. I look forward to spending more time in that area.

I would like the address of Cafe Cito. I know Harrison's has a few stores. We are staying in a family compound that includes one of the stores. Last I was there, there was no cafe in site.

Thanks again.

If you are familiar with Puerto Plata, Cafe Cito moved from downtown to the old Rum Runners building. It is, from the Playa Dorada, just before Harrison's.
