Sorry, I did not travel in tourist mode, and the Dominicans I was with got us Dominican prices all the way. If you are a full-blown tourist, then expect to not know what anything costs, really. Have fun and haggle a bit, step out of the tourist box. have fun

I believe most hotels inside Playa Dorado have the rates posted. I was in Playa Naco last weekend and the posted rate to Caberete was US$22, so I guess the price will be around US$18-20 to the airport.

Dude, the hotels have POSTED rates to everywhere in the DR, right there at the reception desk. They are usually a bit more expesnive than Dominican fares.
I happen to live here so I never have to read them. But you can be sure that the info you got here is pretty straight. You are on vacation, so what's a buck or two?
Take Mainer's advice and go local. Just ask some of the staff and they will be all too happy to show you how to save some cash.

HB...I'm Mainegirl....not Mainer....although we both hail from one of the two best states in the union, according to Frost. The other one is New Hampshire.

HB suggested "going local", however, that may be easier said than done. To go local you would have to find your own way to the highway, then be dropped off onhe airport access road about 50 yards from the entrance to the terminal.

If you can manage that with the luggage that I assume you will have, then cross the highway and flag down one of the public cars (they have a red box on roof that says Sosua-PtoPta) and tell them you want to go to the airport terminal. They will drop you off at an unmaned guard booth near the parking lot. This will be cheaper than a taxi, but it will mean a considerable walk (assuming you are starting from a hotel) to the highway and a shorter walk to the terminal from where you are dropped off.

Regarding Robert's figure for the charge from Playa Naco to Cabarete, it was surprising since the posted rate from Cabarete to Playa Dorada is RD$250, less than US$15.

Rates inside a resort complex tend to be higher than the general taxi rates because there is no competition.

I'm curious, is there some reason why it is essential to know the "posted rate?"

Ken: - Gladly, whenever you are in an area, foreign or even domestic, and you are not familiar with the system, and choose to use a (especially non - metered) taxi, it is suggested that a price be agreed upon before you depart. This is common sense.

My purpose is - to more or less establish the ballpark rate from the airport to Playa Dorada. Arriving at 1 or 2 in the morning, or any other time for that matter, I am not interested in looking for a cheaper price, but I do want to know if the rate quoted to me by the cab driver, is reasonable.
It is not a matter of saving money, but if a driver quotes me 400 pesos, and I know it should be about 250, then I know I am in a negotiating position.

My daughter was charged 100 pesos more in Sto. Domingo, because she didnt know the price airport to Boca Chica.

HB- I know the rates are posted at the hotels, that is my question. If I was already there, why would there be a need to ask the question? My helicopter is out of service.
