Please look at the Trip Reports section of this site, the Resort Reviews section of this site , and also visit
www.debbiesdominicantravel.com She has a large number of reports from resorts all over the island.

Good luck..

The only place in the DR that can be even remotely considered 5 star would be Casa de Campo!

La Romana resorts are closer to santo Domingo if you want tours. Punta Cana area has beautiful beaches, and you can also go on tours but they are further. Puerto Plata is a little more of a party place, but the resorts are nice.
Enjoy your trip wherever you decide to visit.

Hey Tony! Remember that in this person's world, a three star, is a room with a bed and water. No fan, no A/C, no TV. Maybe a bar of soap and not much hot water. Even the older POP places would be palaces and the IberoStar would be out of the Arabian Nights!

Villa Serena, in Las Galeras.

It's not an AI but for me it's the most romantic hotel in the entire island. I spent my honeymoon there and it was fantastic. It might be a bit pricey, but it's worth it. We spent a week there and another week at an AI with all your standard ammenities.
