Default Travel w/ laptop

Greetings!

My wife and w/ be traveling for about three weeks, primaraly on the North Coast, and I was wondering about taking my laptop.
It would be used for e-mail, downloading digital images, and the like. My question is: Is it worth the risk of having it "liberated" ?
How safe are hotels when you're not in your room? etc. We plan on doing quite a few activities that are not conducive to having a laptop strapped to your backside. It would be easy enough to get extra memory cards for my camera and not worry about it till we got home and I realize that buying time on the internet is rather simple. Give me you thoughts.
Thanks in advance,
Mark & Kelly

Never was a problem for me (travelling with a laptop and leaving it in hotel rooms that is).

YMMV.

I travel with a laptop all the time to download digital pictures and also DV movies so I can reuse the tapes. I have a Defcon I alarm which runs a wire cable through a little device (included) that locks into the locking slot in all laptops. If the cable is cut or the thing moves too much an alarm goes off. I fasten it to a chair and go out. Still it is possible that it could be stolen so back it up and buy insurance.

I watch DVD's on the plane en route, play MPEG latin music videos in the room on its TV for friends and have a 3,000 song MP3 library plus digital editing. Essential and with some resonable steps it is secure.

Get a DC/AC power supply and fly on American and you can power it while you fly, too.
