Smile Help! Info needed!

Hello!

My boyfriend and I are thinking of going to DR sometime next year, maybe aroung May time. We dont know much about it, apart from it looks to be an amazingly beautiful island!

Can anyone tell me about the weather, whats it like in April, May, June??? Is there a hurricane season or time when its particularly rainy, or anything like that? In the brochures all it says is that its hot!

As for bugs, iv been reading a lot of the messages already on here. I can cope with most bugs but NOT spiders. I really do have a very large phobia about them What are the chances that i'll see any big ones??

Any info you can give would really be appreciated.

Thanks!

Default Come on down!

Weather is great. If you get too hot you can go up a mountain. There is plenty of A/C if need be. Water is great and the drinks are cold. What else?

Oh spiders. We we do have them but you won't see any. Just remember that they are there to eat little bugs, just like the lizards eat the mosquitos. don't worry about it.

As far as hurricanes go, you will have a better chance of getting hit by a car (in your home town!) than experiencing a hurricane at that time of the year.

That is why this is such a nice place.

Default Thank you!

Thanks for your info Hillbilly! Much appreciated!

My boyf has phoned me at work to confirm that we can definately go next year! Woohoo! Oh i am sooo excited! I've only been back from my other holiday 2 weeks and i want to go again now!!

Which are the best resorts? My travel agent said Playa/Costa Dorada is the best, but the beaches on the east coast e.g. Baravo look amazing!

We are both in our twenties and want a relaxing holiday, with some day time activities and with something to do at night time.

What about trips? What would you recommend? In the brochures they seem to be quite expensive, but they usually are when you book through your holiday rep!

Again thank you for any info!

Cool

I can tell you that you will have a wonderful hot weather and don't worry about the spiders. You will see are the big ones also , but usually they are more afraid of you
In any case, it is a wonderful palce to visit, my favourite is the North Coast:Sosua and Cabarete. I have lived there for over 6 month and had hard time leaving, as the people you meet are absolutely wonderful.
If you need any help with accommodation in the N.coast of Dr, have alook at our website or just send me an email and I will proivide you with any other info you might need and palces to go.
Good luck and happy travels.

Default Where to Stay

I would suggest Cabarete, not Playa Dorada, for lots of reasons. Playa Dorada is an enclave of hotels and shops for tourists wrapped around a golf course. There is nothing to see outside the front gate within walking distance. One of the best things about this island is the people (when they're not driving that is) and you won't get to get out and see the people from Playa Dorada. You'll spend your time mingling with other gringos! My Dominican wife points out too that she thinks the beaches there smell bad! I always thought that about the Puerto Plata area too. Very fishy smelling with little green stuff growing all over under the water. For sure the beaches from Sosua Eastward are glorious and far nicer than at Playa Dorada. Cabarete is a wonderful little beach town. Gorgeous big beach full of wind surfers, kite surfers, etc all ringed with great restaurants and bars. It's also a much younger crowd and you'd probably fir right in.

Also there's a litte info at: http://www.cabarete.com

Cool Depends on your definition of "hot"

My last 2 trips to the DR were in April and May. Daytime highs were usually in the 80's; just the ticket to help me forget the long, cold and dreary Illinois' winters just past!

Rains are usually brief; a few minutes or half an hour. Go on down and enjoy yourselves; it'll change your lives forever.

Where in Illinois are you from Swede? I'm from Dubuque. Lived 16 years in a house on a bluff over the Mississippi River in East Dubuque, Illinois.

It can get hot down here, but Sosua, and Cabarete always have a great breeze so you don't notice. I've seen low to mid 90s occasionally in town at that time of year. Usually 80s though tempered by brief showers or thundershowers. I found it was hotter living a little ways up off the ocean like in La Mulatta, or around the international school. Just didn't have the breeze. Then if you get up a little ways, maybe 300-500 feet like here at Xanadu once again you get that great trade wind breeze. I never have even had to resort to air conditioning here.
