Don't be a fool
The shortest quickest path to years in truly deplorable jails with little hope of early release or assitance is to dabble in any drugs while in the DR, marijuana included.
Watch Midnight Express for an example of your new address.

Just don't do it
Seriously, getting busted with any type of drugs in the DR is not good for a non dominican, especially. Oh, they are available but you will be set up so fast that as you are being shook down, you will be setting up a buy from someone and the local police will be hiding waiting to bust you, hopefully just for money not the DR jail, either way you will get your rude wake up call. Have been in US jail but that is cakewalk from what I have heard from others regarding DR jails. The DR is not tolerant of drugs at all.

US prisons are country clubs where you can buy anything. DR jails are your worst nightmare. But you can buy many things too!!

If you are a foreigner who is even suspected of looking for drugs, you will most certainly be set up by the undercover police. You will then be in for a very miserable, frightening and expensive experience.
These undercover police are everywhere. Unless you get a glimpse of a pistol, you have no idea which of the Dominicans you see on the street, on the bus, in the bars, etc., are undercover police looking for people who are ripe for the picking.
(Of course, in the DR the fact a person has a pistol doesn't necessarily mean he is a policeman.)

Unless there are about 5,000 of them in Boca Chica alone.
