Default Customs changing rules for overstaying 90 days in the DR?

hi everyone,

I haven't gotten the full story but my friend's girlfriend (french vietnamese who speaks perfect spanish) left the island after spending 3 years in las terrenas. At the POP airport, customs tried to charge her $12,000US (yes it was US not pesos!) for overstaying her time. Of course she freaked out. She showed them an expired work permit and they let her out paying the normal nominal fees. Does anybody know what's happening as this is very concerning!!!

Exclamation Very odd

I swear I read this and some replies last night and now it is here again with no replies. And nowhere else in the forums list. Obviously this is a scam attempt as the amount tops out at not much more than $20 US for years of overstaying the tourist card, let alone a work visa.

So what is happening is nothing than a one-off attempt vs. the implication this is the norm which is highly doubtful. And as you say you don't have the full story.

NB: It would be the immigration folks not customs that run that overstay booth.

here is the story:

She stayed in the Dominican Republic for 3 years without ever leaving. They told her that the penalty is US$13,000. Then she pulled out a temporary worker's permit, valid for 6 months, that she got the first few months she was in the DR. So, it was expired for some 2 and 1/2 years but the officers were still very impressed by it. They then made her pay only 300 pesos.

I did hear that the rules changed but since i haven't myself overstayed since over a year, I don't know what the rules are.

Please do not post this anymore on DR1, I'm sick of deleting this thread about the US$12,000 etc.

The rules have not changed. I assume the guy was looking for a bribe and got his English numbers mixed up.

If you post this message again, I will delete your account, is that clear enough?
