Default budget hotels in punta cana

My wife and I are going to the punta cana area and would like some advise on where to stay. We're not into all inclusive. We prefer to stay in private hotels or villas. We like traveling around and have spent several winter vacations traveling in the Caberete to Samana area . We backpack along the coast staying in towns or villages booking hotels as we go. We enjoy getting in to the country and meeting the people. Any advise would be welcome. So far I've found out about Hotel Cortecito,Hotel Cook,Villas Princesa. Have a list of ones I can't find info on.Villa Nicole,La Posada de Piedra Gastehaus,Pension La Casita, Apartamentos Gastillo. Any advise or experiences would be helpful.

Here is some add'l information:

La Posada de Piedra, is a guest house on the beach in El Cortecito. It is a mom and pop operation, the owners are super people. It has internet service, restaurant and bar. Price is about US $30-40 night. Phone: 809-221-0754 fax: 552-1083 email: laposadadepiedra@hotmail.com / www.laposadadepiedra.com

Villas Nicole is in Residencial Costa Bavaro a.k.a. Villas Bavaro. It is an apartment block presently being marketed for sale as condos. I will be seeing the owner this Christmas Eve and will ask if he is offering any short term rentals.

Edit: Dec 26. I spoke with the owner of Villas Nicole, he informed he is not soliciting for short term guests, does not take reservations, and occupancy is based on apt availability.

Regards, PJT

Thanks for all your help. It was most helpful in my search. Haven't had much luck in finding rooms, but its a short notice request due to seat sales being offered for Dec 31-Jan 7. We'd thought we try just in case their might be a chance someone had some rooms not sold out.
