I have absolutely nothing concrete to contribute in terms of suggestions on where to stay. But I must say you will have an awesome time in Santo Domingo. There are cool night clubs with a good mix of people and especially women - the focus of your trip.
During the day you can just sit at any cafe on this street with no vehicle traffic I think they call it "el Conde". Sit there drinking El Presidente and within a few minutes an attractive young woman will appear and sit near you. She will make eye contact, be thrilled at everything you say and love that you are American. It is a little game and you will know it but still feel like a king. Then you can take it from there.

Anyway, like I said nothing to contribute really but that doesn't stop anyone else. Learn a little dancing, listen to the music, see the sites, feel the warm air on your skin - Enjoy. Oh and one more thing, they have a drink which is orange juice and milk sounds disgusting I know but try it.

Another option that I am depating on is flying into Santo Domingo, spending 2 days in a AI in Boca Chica (?) then catching a bus up to Sosua/Cabarete.

So many choices. I do know that we would like to spend the majority of our time on the North Coast.

I haven't read the whole thread so if I repeat anything in this post excuse me.
In Boca Chica there is an AI resort there with beach access cheaper than the others and it is called the Boca Chica Resort. I have stayed there twice and found it to be the rooms/food to be adequate but the price was very good. (NO GUESTS ALLOWED)It is a few blocks from the main stip there where there is some tourist trinket stores and seedy nightlife (you guys will be fine).

The bars on that strip only have three walls, the absence of the fourth leaves them open to the street. You can stroll by and pick one. The bars pack in hookers, if you're interested in more than table company there are seedy little rooms that cost 200 pesos, no check-in just hand the money to the "motel" owner who will unlock the door. Anyway if you are that close to Santo Domingo take a taxi or for a dollar take a bus into the city center and step up in terms of quality women. I don't do anything more than look but the women there are more what they call beeper girls. Enrolled at the university or some such endeavor and just making some cash. They don't seem to recognize themselves as prostitutes in the same way a college kid doesn't view himself as a pizza delivery guy - just a gig for now sort of thing.
