Bahia Principe/Rio san juan!

Hey guys, i am travelling to puerto plata for a week in February. We are staying at the ahia Principe, i am the adventurous type so i will definitley want to check out the locals and spends some money in the country that is gracious enough to host me for a week. Just wondering what you guys recommend? Any spots i should avoid? Thanks
