2 weeks in the DR, what would you do?

Hi,
I will be traveling with four friends to the DR the last two weeks of June. We would like to get some advice on what to do and what not to do. WHat do you think? Our tenative plan is this:
Jarabocoa 2 nights (an outdoorsy activity -looking for some advice here!)
Santo DOmingo 5 nights (language school and staying with host DR families)
Last 5 nights: Somewhere beachy on the north coast that is nice but inexpensive, somewhere that we are not isolated with just Americans (I'm going to the DR to have a different experience, otherwise we'd go to Florida).
What about transportation around the island? Should we take buses or should we hire a driver?

Go river rafting at Rancho Baiguate in Jarabacoa. You can spend the night there.

I would include Scuba Diving in Sosua (gorgeous North coast beach)
