Default Mosquitos/Sand Fleas

Regarding the above - can anyone tell me if pure coconut oil REALLY WORKS. We are going to Bahia Principe San Juan this weekend and I do remember being bitten very badly a few years ago when in Puerto Plata.

Should I wait and buy it there, cost? Or should I get it at a health store here in Toronto. I have bought Deep Woods Off with DEET but have read that it does not work against these vicious biters.

Greetings,
Believe it or not,"Skin so Soft" by Avon works pretty well ,likewise "Pure" African Shea Butter.I used them both when I was in Nigeria(Lagos) in 2001.If those can stop the African mosquitos,I think the Dominican ones which are quite milder should be no problem. You can use them separately or together.

BULL SH**, when it comes to mosquitoes nothing works as well as DEET. As for sand flies I've never had a problem, but have been told that baby oil works great.

the skin so soft thing is just a myth. see here for details.

in fact Avon had to came up with their own bug repellant called "Skintastic" because of it. Skintastic contains DEET (6.9%), but not nearly as much as Deep woods OFF. and it (DEET) works in RD, trust me.

Default skin so soft works for me

When you're sitting out getting eaten alive it's fun to test all the different remedies on your guests, one arm covered in "off" one in skin so soft etc. Skin so soft works for us better than most other things time and time again. People who use copious quantities of "off" would do well to read the small print - go home and wash it off immediately kind of jumps off the tin at you and it's very expensive. Skin so soft is cheap so you can cover yourself in it and it's handy when you crawl into bed pi**ed at four in the morning because you don't need to clamber into the shower to decontaminate yourself!

The article on myths is interesting but you won't get me to change my mind because I've run my own field studies and in my opinion my conclusions are very different from theirs.

Once you've lived here for a while they just seem to leave you alone anyway and I've never seen anyone try to work out why that is. - Perhaps they should?

Simon & Nicky,
Well put!!!!!!! People need to try everything and see what works best for them;nevertheless DEET is a CHEMICAL that EVENTUALLY does harm to the breathing and skin.I'm glad someone agree with me able Skin so soft. The Pure African Shea Butter worked for me.the SWEST NILE Virus was brought by an "AFRICAN Mosquito". Nigeria is an AFRICAN country.Maybe the ardent ready will see my reference to the difference between the Dominican ones and the Nigerian ones(in Lagos).Take care you two.

You are in Toronto so you can buy Muskol, which I don't think Americans have down there. Buy Muskol. Shoppers has the pump spray for $1.99 right now, 1/3 the normal price, I bought 4. And I should have used it in Nicaragua in August since I got Dengue.....use something with DEET.
