Buy prepaid cellphone card (pop)?

where can I buy a prepaid cell-phone card in the puerto plata area?
-what denominations do they sell them?
-how much does it cost on the cellphones to call the US?

I'm heard buying a prepaid cellphone card is better than buying a
landline calling card although a little more expensive. The reason is I heard(again) you cannot use the calling cards within the hotel grounds.
Is this true?

The prepaid cell phone cards are available at the Playa Dorada plaza, and at many pharmacies, food stores, colmados, etc. in Puerto Plata.

I think you might be mistaken about not being able to use a prepaid calling card at the hotel. Years ago, before moving here, we were always able to ask the hotel operator for a line to use a Communicard (Verizon).

The Verizon cards come in 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 peso denominations. The same card is used for cell phones, land lines and prepaid internet access.
