driver and site seeing

Does anyone ever hire a driver and go site seeing? So you aren't restricted to an excursion bus?

When we were in Jamaica last year we got a driver to go to Ochos Rios to visit a resort.

I was thinking that maybe we could get a driver and go to Higuey and Altos de Chevan and then have more flexibility with how long we want to stay?

Any thoughts? Cost?
