while sitting in rockys in sosua the other morning...a guy told me a story on how he was attacked with machetes by two men when he came home one night...he shot and killed one of them...and even told me that there was a thread devoted to this incident. if true..can expats obtain gun permits easily?

Gun permits can be obtained by legal residents.

They don't hand out gun permits to gringos like candies.
I'm not saying that it is impossible for a bad guy to get a permit, but, most bad guys don't bother with permits.
The fellow you met is a good decent guy and we're lucky to have him still with us. They slashed him something like 10 times with a machetti.
I am proud to consider him as a friend and feel he that he not only righteously defended himself, but he also defended all of us who live here, as he removed a dangerous menace from circulation.
A few more like him in our community, would go a long way in deterring these lowlives who commit these crimes.
He's the guy you want standing next to you when someone attacks you.

i agree..ironically how we started talking about this was...once he learned that i worked for the news here in nyc..we discovered that we had a mutual friend...who was shot to death in a casino in las vegas....so i guess no matter what country you're in...or how safe you think you are...keep your heads up.

Expats and legal residents are not the same thing. There are many expats here who are not legal residents.

Have no idea what the percentages are, but I suspect that even though there are quite a few who are, there are probably more who aren't. Although there has been talk in the past about requiring residency, especially for persons employed and perhaps even those who live here for more than a certain period, I am not aware of any concerted effort at present to bring this about.

There is talk now about a census of expats, so this may lead to something in the future.

Yes, I survived the trip. We enjoyed seeing the family and the USA is a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.
