best ways to get to other islands?

we would like to do some touring of the caribbean--yes, i know it doesn't get better than the DR but there is still a big world out there! what are the least expensive ways to island hop? ferries? boats? charter or commercial? and any insights on places to go would be great--

If largest is best (and also cheapest), then you should go to the largest island of the Caribbean (of course, after first visiting the DR), Cuba. There are regularly scheduled Cubana de Aviación flights from Santo Domingo, and the Cuban authorities do not stamp your passport on arrival or departure (that way you get around the Helms-Burton law against prohibition for US citizens from travelling to Cuba)...
