Default Money...

Hi Planner,

Thanks so much for the info, I booked HV on a whim after viewing your photos many, many pages ago. I think its great that reading this thread becomes a daily commitment, and takes time. I can't believe the traffic and I promise to provide a thorough and unbiased review after I return (Feb 8-15).

I am curious about cash. Traditionally I bring US travellers cheques and have been to many countries in the Caribbean & Mexico (I am Canadian so the US money is a grudge purchase...) Lately, countries like Mexico that have their own currency seem to be figuring out that they can get more $$$ from the tourists by only accepting US money (they pretend that the peso is dead at most cruise ship ports, US $$$ only). I have never been to DR so are they still accepting their own money (what a concept!?) or do they hose the tourists for US money? I read the ATM info, and am wondering if in the long run I am better off to bring a bunch of US cash with me, or will I be okay with the ATM pesos.

Thanks,
MBomber

Anyone want to guess what kind of books Planner likes? We could take bets or something.

YOu can pay in Dominican pesos almost everywhere here. Just be careful to calculate the exchange. Some will price in US dollars and then use their own exchange rate to convert. When negotiating - insist on negotiation in the currency you want to pay in.

Reading material: well as I am more then willing to be entertained - what do you think I like to read????

I think you may be a mystery girl.

Hey I have a question planner. Are the electrical outlets there the same as here? (someone probably covered that a while ago, but it's getting so big in here!!!) hehehe

Hi Planner,

Would childrens books be of any value to the schools? We have tons....
Also, my kids have collected some watches, we will replace the batteries, and would like to give some of them out to the local kids....or is that a good idea? A collegue of mine was in Africa working and gave some kids stickers and gifts, and then found they were beaten for them..... I'm sure dominician is not like this, but want to check first....

OttawaSens..... i hate take off or landing....and have to slurp on a cool refreshing drink to even get anywhere....I'll be the one staggering to the washroom......LOL

PS... I will let everyone know what my thoughts are about HV when I arrive....and keep you posted... Leaving Jan18 for 2 weeks.....

luv2travel - if you are from Canada they are the same. If you are from the UK bring those converter thingies...(very technical term..LOL)

Critters - love the handle. YEs kids books will be good but will have to go to a school that teaches English! Watches - cool idea. Stickers and gifts - again great idea and good for teachers to use in schools again!

Let me repeat my advice that I posted previously. Teachers do not like the interruption that happens when tourists visit the classes. Kids get too few hours of instruction as it is. The kids get all excited and then do NOT settle back down after your visit. So, while they really appreciate that you want to help please do not visit the school. I am happy to help get the items to schools and teachers discreetly, or to Beyond the Beach. Also, keep in mind that while you love to see their faces, there is a lot of pride here too.

Reading - I don;t particularly like romance unless it is a great story. But, others here do! But would love a newspaper.....

Critters - you a nurse?

Did anyone in Canada see Jeff Hutcheson on Canada AM at Ocean World this morning? The clips they showed were great, and a good intro to those of you show are considering going to Ocean World when in the DR.

Planner, or anyone in HV now, - just curious - how is the construction proceeding in the beach bar area?
