This question was asked recently by azb. There were alot of different responses. Legally you probably could but the local police may write a summons anyway. If you are polite with the police and explain your circumstances more than likely will have no problem.

The answer is most likely yes... as long as you don't drive like a Dominican!

Default I have rented cars with my DR license in the US

Being from the US but no longer having a US license, I use my DR license to rent cars whenever I am in the US. It has never been questioned, although one time additional insurance was extorted out of me in Florida. Now I make sure to carry the credit card rental insurance agreement text with me to show an agent that I am covered by using the credit card.

The only problem I have had was that one rental agent couldn't find the Dominican Republic in his computerized list of countries when filling out the forms and he ended up using Dominica instead.

Different states will have different laws on how long you can drive on a non-local license until you get a local license while living there. This is even true with respect to licenses from a different state. Much like the DR places time limits on the validity of licenses from out of the country.
