Hello everyone
I have to start by saying you have a great web site here full of info.
I am thinking about traveling the island of Hispaniola. I have hopefully a 6 week vacation coming from the hospital I work and think your island might be the perfect place for me. I am very interested in getting involved in international health care. I keep thinking Haiti is a place that has been calling to me the most. At this point I don’t speak French or Creole but it seems that the need for medical care is there. The more I have looked into it. It seems like the DR would be the best place to start. I speak strong traveler’s Spanish and seem to always be able to run into the people with the information on the places I want to travel to. This plan worked very well in the southern tip of Spain before I traveled to Morocco so I thinking this may work in DR to Haiti.
I would love to spend a week or 2 working on my Spanish and possibly working somewhere medically in the DR. I am a nurse but would be happy to work/observe on almost any level health care fallowing doctors, rural clinics, pediatric hospitals ect. I would most likely take some private Spanish classes as I speak some Spanish at work but try to take classes when I travel trying to get better.
I would like to travel by bus to Haiti and have found a few stories on DR1 about travel to Haiti but if anyone can tell me about places I could work medically, study French and/or Creole and sites I should see I would be very thankful.
Lastly I am a 31 year single male so some night life while I am on vacation would be important as well. I guess anywhere I take Spanish classes will also have a young traveler nightlife. It looks like Rocky’s in Sosua is about as cheep as hotels get a $25 a night are there other places around this price range through out the island as I don’t want to go home too far into dept.
Is October to December a ok time to travel?
Hope this was not too long with too many questions for my first post. If anyone has any info on the above please let me know….. The more I learn about DR the more I feel this could be the first of many trips.
