Default Coming to DR - advices please!

Hello everybody,
I'm sure regulars here have seen these question very often, but this is my first post so I'll just ask 'em...!
I'm a 30 yo guy, coming to Punta Cana on Xmas time.
In punta cana there're 2 friends of mine who work in a bar-restaurant and they will guest me so it's cool....but all i heard about punta cana besides how beautiful the beaches are is that is a resorts-only place, an ideal gateway for a family or a couple holiday.
Sure i'll stay in punta cana a few days but I'm more interested in active nightlife, surfing, younger crowd, meeting people, gettin to know the local people as well so I read about the North Coast (Puerto Plata, Cabarete...), found a 150Us$ flight from punta cana (one way), so I was thinkin to drop by there for a few days/a week (I'll be stayin 2 weeks total in DR).
300Us$ for a return ticket is not so bad: does anybody know a cheaper local airline though?
I know buses are cheap but it'll take forever and i dont have much time.
Since I'm goin in a busy peak period (24 dec - 8 jan) do you think i should book a hotel in advance or i'll find something (i dont need luxury just a clean place to crash)?
What would you advise me?

Thank You very much!

A.
