Lightbulb Long in the tooth

This post must set a record for longevity since the short and incorrect "rat" post was nearly 10 months ago and we are still seeing replies.

Any thread about Boca Chica has the potential to become a DR1 Classic. My computer senses all the built up energy in coming posts and start vibrating every time I log on to DR1 and find a thread where Boca Chica is the topic of discussion.
And life goes on and on. Have a nice day.

Default Boca Chica - Hamaca Resort

I was there back in 1994. The resort is gorgeous and I had never seen water so flat, so calm, so clean and sand so clean, so beige in my life. Then again, it was my very first trip to the Caribbean and first trip to the D.R. I was overwhelmed by the ocean, above everything else.

The buffet was delicious, outstanding. We stayed there on a day pass.

My complaint? We asked about rates to stay overnight. (Well, my husband asked them in Spanish, since he is Dominican).

They told us the rate would be cheaper for him than for me since he is Dominican. (At the time we were living together in U.S., so he is really American-Dominican, not a D.R. resident).

He flipped out on the reservation guy, calling him racist, etc., and all that. I said, "let's just leave. I wouldn't want to stay at a resort that has two prices for Americans and Dominicans."

And that's that...

To leopardlady,

It must seems very unfair to you that the rate was cheaper for your husband as he was considered a local but I can assure you that it is a common rule in hotels in the Caribean (Barbados, Saint-Lucia, Saint-Martin...) and maybe elsewhere, I don't know.

I asked once why it was so and was told that it is because the local governments don't want only the tourists (often richer) to enjoy these kind of facilities. So they lower the room rates for local people so that they can afford them too.

One might think that one thing that happened 9 years ago may not be neither a fair nor accurate portrayal of what it is like in 2003. Talk about holding a grudge, wow.

Talking You know what happens when you *ass*ume....

Who said I was holding a grudge? I simply felt like posting *my* experience there 9 years ago. And since I DID put the date that I was there, I wasn't trying to mislead anyone. It happened to us, after all. If I held a grudge, I would not have visited the country again like I just did.

If you noticed, I posted all the positive things about the resort FIRST and *MY* negative experience last.

Let the reader (or whoever is interested in visiting that resort) come to their own conclusions.

Sheesh, some folks just can't deal with hearing ANY negatives....
--------------------------------------

To Mimi: thanks for that bit of info; at that time, my husband did tell the hotel worker that he was NOT a local. In any case, I wish I had known this nine years ago...

I am convinced that there are either A) competition spying and spreading false rumors about different hotels or the DR in general B) People that stay at 3 stars hotels but expect 5 Diamonds service C) People that had a bad experience with a dominican and want to hamper the image of the country D) people from other countries that are jealous of how nice the dominican people are, how great most people's vacation turns out to be, and how much of a real paradise this island is. Otherwise, why would negative reports like The rats in Hamaca would be countered by hundreds of positives? Can't see other reasons. Aaaaah, greed.

In fairness to the Hamaca in Boca Chica people now reading this post must realize that many of the reports are from people staying there in 1998. Lots of things have changed since then all over the country. The Hilton now owns the Hamaca and certainly there must be improvements. Also In 1998 the island was hit by a major huricane and it took a bit of time for the resorts to make repairs from the damage. Maybe.....IF ....anyone ever did see a rat....it was also a result of the storm. I know SD had a problem with rats, mice, bugs, and mosquitos at that time. Some people will complain just to hear themselves or to try and get a refund or a free trip. Whatever.

Default Coral Hamaca

Im really not sure what hotel you actually stayed in because I guarantee it wasnt the Hamaca..I have stayed in 9 different resorts in the Dominican Republic including Secrets and I will say the best by far is the Coral Hamaca...In fact, I was married there in April and had my entire wedding party staying there also...there was not a bug to be found in anyones room and unless you were hanging around the trash dump there were definately no rats running around, unless you were refering to the annimation team (hahaha just kidding)
I have stayed at this property three times and never had even a little problem there, staff was wonderful, food was good and the ocean front rooms are beautiful.
