Thumbs up Rocks and trees and all these things - to Yoda

In 5 days in Santo domingo for the Pan Am games. Addmitedly i was a bio major and am a little bit of a hippy, but i really like DR.

I had a wonderful time. Learned to be truly ashamed of my countrymen, who saw garbage and poverty, inefficiency and unfinished games sites. Look beyond that and see; intense beauty, lush jungle, flowers everywhere, plentiful good food, amazing wild life, etc etc etc. The people are beautiful, friendly, easy going, healthy, patient with my bad spanish.

What ever you do, try to leave it unspoiled. And remember [the prime directive, as] helping is often as damaging as meaning to harm something as DR.

I saw a big Tarantula, a huge tree frog, great lizards, all tame enough to catch in the cool morning. Lots of parrots, but none close up. Maybe a mongoose.

Hotels, beaches AI's...couldn't tell you. We have those in LA so I avoided them. as a waste of preciouse time.

My Taxi driver drove like it was a dance. Slowing and accelerating in an easy ebb and flow, not jerky. The driving is a little like a huge slow game of chicken. Sort of with Texas drivers, but with NY style jaywalking. But I saw no traffic accidents until i got back to the states.

A good taxi is worth it. Mine had to drive while being bombarded with insesant questions in uninteligible spanish and some English, about every imaginable subject, for hours at a time. He helped with Spanish lessons, tourist guide, procued the coldest Presidente, found me an internet office etc.

I will never again feel sorry that my favorite part of a trip is something i saw in a vacant lot, or could see at home if I took the time.

Remember Yoda and the planet Dagoba? Tai Chi and Chi Gong on DR are ....WOW.

Yep saw all the same thing you did. Lost several years off my life after being forced of the road by a semi on our side of the road, passing another truck on a blind corner. Good thing our driver, Octavio is very alert. He was shook up, so it must have been a real close call. Saw several accidents. Just because there is beautiful scenery and wonderful people is no reason to ignore the fact that the garbage, especially in Santo Domingo is appalling. Even most Dominicans are embarrassed by it. In Jarabacoa they have signs especially in the better neighbourhoods about picking up your trash and keeping the rivers clean. The message only seems to get to a few people.
The inefficiency is caused by coruption and ignorance more than any cultural problem.
Next time take a trip up to the mountains, you'll love the clean air, more vegetation, birds,...etc and you will enjoy it in less garbage but the same poverty that is everywhere in the DR.

Wink Re: Okey Kay. ¿Qué?

Wow, thank you,
I am honored to be asked back. I knew a little because I read some of DR1.

I really do want to visit, I'll keep trying to find a way. I will keep trying to win a free trip to the caribean and looking for cheap flights. etc. I read somwhere that John Edward puts on seminars in the caribean. Anyway, I sort of splerged for this trip. ;-(

Maybe there are horse ranches up north that need a good physical therapy type massage specialist. The spas mentioned by XR in the insect thread sound facinating. But maybe they belong in the clown bin.

Anyway, people keep telling me it is even more lush up north but i can't imagine it. Especially now that I'm back home in LA. In a good year we get 5 inches of rain and it is so dry and brown here.
