Tour companies
They are the last to know about changes at resorts, whether they are finished, opened, what they are called, look at the Viva Tangerine (sign says Wyndham Tangerine) overbooking debacle, the tour operator still claims they know nothing about it but many posters tell us they have been bumped and moved to other resorts. I was told in early November by the Canadian tour operator the Viva was finish, yah right! 86 rooms not complete, no entertainment center, one bar only. It is likely the same with the other tour group they did not know it the Cabarete/Estrella was going to be closed when they printed they brochure last summer, it definitely was closed in late November.
Today it Estrella del Mar, tomorrow its Azzuro Beach Club then who knows what, we will know first before the Tour companies do for sure.

What's in a name anyway. Take the attitude of Palmtree and just "be happy". I plan to spend a day or two there between the 24th and 30th when I visit from Sosua. Lets a have a few drinks and decide what the name is THAT week.

To Oakville arriving Cabarete Bay Hotel 26 Jan.
You'll be there a day earlier then my husband and me. Hope all is ok. It still sounds confusing and if you believe the people who live there (I mean they should know). It still sounds iffy.
I am going to be calling Sunquest again and the tour company I booked with. They have to believe us that "something" is not quite right.
A few things being still finished. Ok. Most of it, or confusion. No way. I don't care how cheap it is. It could be free and I would be upset.
I will keep in touch if I find out anything else. Hope you do too, as well as anyone else who has any info.
If you do go on the 26 and get a chance, maybe you can post what's going on there.
Hope to see you there. I'll be the little 5 footer with salt and pepper hair lugging around a 6'2 er with salt and pepper hair.
I've retired early, he is still slugging away as a Platton Chief with the Kitchener Fire Dept. It's his fault we are going here, instead of a cruise. He's really gonna owe me if there are problems. Big Time.
Buy you a drink if we meet.

Heh looks like a few others have logged on and are going there too.
Yes to the drinks to name the hotel. Lets get together and have a "Hotel Naming" party.
As I said you can't miss me and hubby. The long and the short of it. In our early 50's. Feeling still like at least in our 30's (that's all in our head though) the body feels QUITE different. The only thing that matches about us is our hair. Both short and salt and pepper as I said before.
I also have a big mouth. That is I talk a lot and I'm not shy.
See you all there. Wherever there is.

mjkalau, sorry that I can't give you all the detail that you might like, but I didn't do an extensive investigation.
The beach is fine; nothing being done there. The building where beach equipment is distributed to guests is in business, and chairs for guests are available on the beach.
The dining room that has the big, excellent buffet is open and in business, as are the bars. One pool also open
The grounds between the beach and the structures in which the rooms, dining room, etc., are located looks like a construction site. You can easily get to the beach, but a few detours are necessary.
Don't know about dancing, but see no reason why that should be any different than before. The construction work is all on the grounds, as far as I could tell, not on the buildings.
The beach is great; Cabarete is a fun town. The hotel is located at the west entrance to town, so everything in town is within a couple of blocks of the hotel.
As far as I could see, there are quite a few people there. And during the day, quite a few come over from the sister property in Sosua. A shuttle bus runs between the two every half hour or so, so guests in one can visit the hotel/town of the other.
If it is important to you to have everything at the hotel in perfect condition, then you had better see about switching hotels. Save your trip to this one until next year.

Hi Ken
Thansks so very much for all the info. It really did help,
I don't need everything to be perfect at all, never have been like that. It's unreaslistic anyway, however when you book one of these places for me it's the whole place that attracts me or not.
With on exception. Since we snorker, we like a nice beach where you can do that.
As to changing hotels and come to that one next year. I don't think we can do that. We are booked and as long as the hotel is "mostly" functioning I can't see the tour company doing anything, especially since we got a reduced price.
I did hear a lot about Cabaret itself being a neat little town, so I am looking forward to visiting it and of course I did know that we can visit the "sister" hotels, so I'm sure it will be fine.
My husband and I will just have to hope for the best.
You know "The glass is half full, not half empty.",
Thanks again, very much.

If you like to snorkel, I suggest that you visit the "sister" hotel in Sosua and snorkel there. Sosua is better for snorkeling.

I agree with appleman. My brother and his family have been taking the hotel van from Sosua to Cabarete so that their sons could surf the waves. If you want to wind surf or kite board, Cabarete also great. For snorkeling, best to take the van from Cabarete to Sosua and use the beach there. With the armband, guests of one hotel able to eat and drink at the other without any problem.

cabarete bay hotel
Anyone have any more information about the Cabarete Bay hotel? I've been checking Sunquest's rates from Feb 2 to the 9 and they're over double what we paid for the previous week. Looking forward to a week of sun and not having to cook!

Cabarete Bay Hote.
Hi Palmtree
Me and hubby still going down on the 26 Jan.(thought it was 27th)
Anyway, I have not heard "anything" more about this hotel confusion.
I talked to a Sunquest Rep. who said they had been "sold out" for the remainder of the season, and were trying to get more "allotments" from the Starz group or the Hotel, not sure which. Probably the Starz group.
I tied to see if we could add on another week as we payed an extra fee for "special" privilages when traveling with Sunquest and one of them was to make changes to your original travel plans.
However there was nothing left. That is all the planes were booked to and from Toronto and so we could not get a flight home the second week.
The rep. also said that she knew now that there had been a lot of confusion, but that Sunquest did not originally know this and were quite perturbed with Starz. However she said "they" had not got any complaints about the Cabaret Hotel.
As she understands it, Sunquest is selling for the new part of the Hotel and it will now be more expensive then the old part.
However she is not sure what part we are in, even though we booked a "Sunquest" Vacation.
It was the same with a tripa to the DP last year. We were booked for what was called ( on the web site) The Luperon Tropical Beach Resort.
It turned out though that there were, 2 parts to this resor. An old one and a new one and we were in the old one, althougth the whole resort was "together " and the only way you could tell you were in the new or old part was the new look of the buildings.
We had the run of the entire place, which was really beautiful.
And although we were in the old part (which I was at first going to complain about) we were right by the pool where they had the Canadian Maritimes bands playing and we had a ball.
The "old foggies" and honeymooners were at the other side.
ONe side was called the " Luperon Beach Resort and one the Luperon Tropical.
Point is that even the travel companies were really confused about all of this and you get no answer when you e-mail the hotel directly. Calling them wasn't much good either.
I have written the Straz resort and the Cabarete about all the confusion and got no reply.
I will probably call the Cabaret next week just to see what they say. It's an 800 # so not cost.
Good Luck to us all.
Mj in Kitchener.
