I am a Dominican back in my country for 9 years and you are absolutely right. You can see this daily with all the traffic stops on the side of the highways and in cities and towns where people pay a toll to the National Police without having done anything. I refuse to stop most of the time I am waved at and if I stop I will not give them anything.

The airport thing is just a bad cultural habit of wanting to be given something and it doesn't matter what type of government is in charge or who manages the airport. JUST DON'T GIVE THEM ANYTHING! DON'T ACT LIKE PREY!

Default As I promised, I did look in on this and I just got a phone call

FYI: I reported your post to the airport administrator, as I said I would. You did give Jet Blue the name of the official who perpetrated this travesty on you. I just received a call from the airport administrator that informed me that the individual has been located, he will be fired and if he does not come up with your watch, he will go to jail as a thief. If you would give me the make of the watch, I can be sure that he doesn't pull a fast one on us.
Cordially,

H"

It is now 2:35 and I got this call about 4 minutes ago.

That is the key to getting into the airplane with the same material value that you had before you entered the terminal and vice versa.

Tourist got to learn to not be intimidated. The DR is not a country for whinning (it gets you absolutely nowhere) or wimps. Here, you look at these guys straight in the eye and tell them with a firm voice "NO" and if they ask why, just say with the same firm voice and looking straight into their eye pupil and say "NO" one more time, if they insist, in a laud voice call for a higher authority right there on the spot.

If you look at them in the eyes with out looking elsewhere (in fact, make them look away first) and talk to them in a firm voice that creates the sense of self-respect along with the "I'm no wimp, so don't F*** with me". Generally these folks let you go smoothly.

This was trying to leave the country.

Another time coming into the country they asked for $20 US dollars and I gave them 100 pesos so they would NOT wrinkle my clothes. They went through the bag and then asked for more. I told them FLUCK NO.

This place will stay a BANANA Republic till the government gets people with the slightest amount of class working the airports.

Let me give you a tip. DO NOT speak spanish to these guys. When they ask you something keep walking and smiling and laughing and talking ENGLISH. They will try to take advantage of you if you speak Spanish to them. These are the biggest bunch of Scum Bags and the worst part of humanity. They should just take them behind the hangers and shoot the SOB's.

Why this government allows this crap to go on is totally beyond me.

Default Later conversations with the airport administrator

Revealed that the guy was canned, the one that actually had the watch was sent to Arroyo Barril with a stern warning and the guy actually got his watch back. I am noting that he has not said thanks to any one here nor to the airport nor Jet Blue.

Must be a really nice guy!

My advice. Travel in a wheelchair. There were 20 of us last time and no problems ever. If you do not feel comfortable with this bring a cat. Never a problem

How lacking in courtesy, HB, after all your hard work. You now know his name, right? So when he gets scammed again........and he is likely to, giving off those vibes..........you will not exactly be rushing to help? Right?
I suppose it is always possible that he actually DID meet some armed personnel at a different airport & as a consequence is unable to post.............

I only think he needs to say thank you here. I wouldnt thank the airport people nor the airlines for this. They should have taken steps before to avoid this from being a problem.

You think they don't know this crap is going on at the Airports? If you think that and if you think that they don't permit this by not doing squat about it until someone bitches I have a bridge to sell you. I think the Airport people should be fired and jailed for letting this crap go on for so long!

Never been asked for money or extorted at airports. Never lost anything and never had anything stolen. Dumb luck I suppose. The same goes for my husband (who travels constantly and in all directions and sometimes did so with his huge golf case). The only time something was stolen from his suitcase was in Holland, of all places.
