Default Staying Hotel Metur Santo Domingo

I will be making my second trip to DR for seven nights on Jan. 22nd and will be staying at Hotel Metur in Santo Domingo. The prices appear to be fairly reasonable for rooms and it appears to be in a safe location. What is a reasonable expectation of service at this hotel ie.-security, guests, food, rooms?
Having spent my first trip in Boca Chica I thought I would prefer to be in the city. I am looking to go snorkeling again and was hoping to find an agency that I could book travel to Catalina to do so. What is a reasonable price to do this?
Regards,
Bacon
PS.-I will follow up with a trip report upon my return.

We stayed at the Metur for a couple of nights a year ago. It's a great location to be able to just walk out the door and stroll through the Colonial section. The room was small, but decent- nothing the rave about but nothing to complain about either. There's a small bar and restaurant which are not "hidden away" - they exit right onto the street which I thought was kind of nice on a sunny day.

After a Sturday night out we returned at 1:30am or so and had to wait maybe 20 minutes until a guard or somebody strolled across the lobby to let us in. I don't if there was a bell to ring or not, but in any case it was a while before we could get in. I guess you could see that as good or bad, with respect to security.

I don't know other hotels in the area but all in all I thinks it's a good choice.

Enjoy!

Hmm...
Have been there in last August.
The Hotel METUR I know about is near Independencia/Maximo Gomez, Zona Universitaria.
The walk to Zona Colonial takes about 1/2 an hour.
They gave me a key for the main gate, so no further assistance needed to enter at any time of the night.

Yes, yes, I'm sorry. The Hotel MERCURE (sp?) is the one inthe Colonial Zone that I stayed at last year- as was as described.

The Metur in the Zona Universitaria is a tiny hotel in a quiet neighborhood. As coincidence would have it I stayed there last November 24th (which is why I probably got the names confused- the only 2 hotels I've been to in Sto. Dom.).

The Metur was extremely reasonable, both the owner and Jose, who works there, were extremely helpful. They sent a van to pick me up as Las Americas ($25) at night, and also arranged for the same van/driver to take me to CaribeTours at 6:30am the next morning, since I wasn't going to find a taxi passing by at that hour in that neighborhood. For that, just a couple of bucks. The room was very reasonable and clean, about $30 for the room.

Default My stay at Hotel Metur

I am a little slow in posting this but better late than never.

I spent six nights at the Hotel Metur. I was to originally spend seven nights but due to weather problems in U.S. my flight was cancelled an I opted to travel the following day. I telephoned the hotel that I would be one day late on arrival. There were no problems in doing this.
As agreed upon the hotel had a taxi waiting for me at arrival in the airport. For $30 US they gave me an uneventful ride to the hotel.
My room was located directly above the reception area which was no big problem. There was a little amount of noise from the reception area but not really a problem. The room was clean but this is a two star hotel at best. The bed was the typical mattress on top of a frame which was ok. They provided sheets and pillows with no blankets. After checking over the room I found the air conditioner did not work. The following morning I informed the manager and he placed a fan in the room. Two mornings when I went to shower there was no hot water. Must have been used up by then. Oh it was just shortly after 8 a.m. The room had a small television with numerous channels. However, it was small and frequently went off and then back on due to the electric.
Breakfast was available in the mornings at no extra cost. It consisted of eggs, cheese, and some bread rolls.
The hotel is located about 50 to 100 feet up a small street off of Indepencia Ave and about 1 street to the north of Gomez Ave. It was relatively quiet.
You definately get what you pay for and this hotel showed that. Depending upon my budget the next time I may have to spend an extra $20US a night for a little better place.
If you are budget conscious and not looking for top notch accomodations this place is for you. It is two minutes from the Malecon.

According to my map calculations. This hotel is about a 5-10 minute walk from Courtyard Marriot right? Does anyone know if they allow guests to stay overnight?
