I visited Rancho Ecologico El Campeche today. It's only about 30 mins drive from Santo Domingo, past San Cristobal.
Great setting, on a hill overlooking the sea: Palenque and Najayo beaches are nearest. What makes this a place different is that you can camp in a secure site with comfortable facilities, which is not so common in the DR.
They provide tents, or you can bring your own. There are new, clean toilets and showers, and food is provided at a cost of RD$600 per person per day. There is horseriding, mountain biking, chilling out in hammocks, a small farm, party area, volleyball and basketball courts, children's pool, hiking trails, BBQ).
They cater for events such as parties, residential conferences or meetings. They also hold cultural events like the annual eco-jam festival.
Seems like a great place to get away from it all for a couple of days. They are open to the public for lunch on Sundays, or you can take a picnic. We're definitely going to spend a weekend there soon.
