Bringing school supplies??

I've seen several comments on bringing school supplies on vacation as a gift to help the local kids. Most of those comments dealt with POP or SD area vacationers. I'm going to Punta Cana which I understand is less "Dominican-like" and more touristy. Are gifts like school supplies welcomed there too? I'm glad to do something to help out (besides spending money which is a given!) but don't want to dump a case of notebooks and pencils on some poor hotel manager who doesn't know what to do with them.
