Thumbs up Trip Report - July - Sosua

The 4 of us arrived on 1st July and stayed at the Condo's Dominicano. We have done all-inclusive a few years ago, but now choose to do self-catering and the Condo's are handy enough for town etc as they are only 2 minutes away. We did a fund raiser at home in the Isle of Man in June and raised 2 thousand five hundred pounds for the 'Kids of Sosua' which we brought with us and presented to the 'Kids of Sosua Association'.

We ate out every night and our favourite restaurant is the Waterfront, although more expensive then most, its well worth it. Another very good restaurant is Baileys, just down the road from Casa Marina Reef.

We had fabulous days on the beach just lazing around. Some very good friends of ours Bob and Anne who run Eddys bar took us up to the hills - the views are breathtaking.

Bars
Our favourite bar is the Britannia where you can easily just sit and 'people watch' any time of the day or night. The owners, staff and regulars are so friendly and the food is excellent. They do daily specials which are only 120 pesos and very good value. We can highly recommend their chicken and ham pie!!! Another good bar is Checkpoint, which is on the way to the beach. Colleen and Mark run this bar and Colleen does a mean bacon sandwhich. Her meat balls are legendary!!! Again, this bar is very friendly and there is always someone there to chat to. The Voodoo lounge is worth a visit at night as well. Very cheap vodka and red bull!! We did visit Rockys bar for the 4th July party but were not impressed as we were left to our own devises. No-one spoke and we had to cook our own food! The food was good, but we felt it was a bit 'clicky' and we just didn't fit in.

One of our party (dave) was very badly biten by mosquitos and ended up in hospital for 2 days. His legs swelled up so bad and the bites became infected. Thankfully he was ok and able to resume his holiday thanks to the wonderful doctors in Puerto Plata. Thank god for medical insurance!!

We went to visit the kids in one of the villages in the cane fields. We found it very hard to see the conditions these people live in, but they always have a smile on their faces and seem happy enough. We brought pencils, pens, erasers, rulers, sweets and t-shirts for the kids. They were made up and put the t-shirts on there and then.

All in all we had a fabulous time and plan to go back in February. We would never holiday in Europe again. The Dominican Republic is just to addictive!!

James

Default Sorry you thought/think the do at Rocky's

was "clicky" ....I can understand that, but who knew you were Manxman?

At one of these things I tried to put those obnoxious stickers with people's nicknames on them but this year I just forgot.

You have a lot of fans from the good work you do for the Sosúa's Kids Project and I'm sure if we had identified you we would have made you feel more than welcome. Sorry about that.

And don't complain about cooking your own! Lot's of people did..it's one way of being sure it is cooked "your way"...and for the money it's a bargain...

Next time, come to Santiago and we'll have a do for you...

Cordially,

HB

Thumbs up Big Heart

Sounds like a great trip. Alot of satisfaction comes with what you did for the kids.
It's too bad more people don't do the same. I usually bring a couple of Red Sox or Yankees hats or shirts to give them.
Ya know other than the unfriendly and clickish people, the mosquitos and the food you had to cook for yourself, I heard that Rockys really has the BEST ribs.

Ede Norte has been working on a few of the power lines so some parts of Sosua had a few hours without electricity - it's been back to normal since Sunday.

Stay well,
Amy

P.S. sorry you felt that way to the 4th of July bash ..... too bad we didn't run into each other. The truth is that a DR1 gathering does look clicky from the outside, but once you know a few people you realize how diverse/different the group is and that it doesn't matter where you're from or what you do, that the only thing we all have in common is a love(and sometimes hate) for the DR (and Rocky's Ribs which I still haven't tried).
