news from the girl of the Britt!
I have already returned from Sosua more than a month ago but I didn't had the time to share my experience with you before, as I've started working again my 40 hours a week... So good to live in DR hey!?!
I went in DR in Luperon Beach Resort for a week in February and I loved the country so much I wanted to return as soon as possible. So I started to look on the net, to ask questions and read people's experience and look for a place to stay. I spoke with a friend of mine who had lived 6 months in Sosua and she told me it was the best and easiest place to start, as it is half dominican/half tourists. I arrived in Sosua on April 19th and had rented an apartment for 3 months at Bella Vista condos, on the calle Ayuntamiento next to Eddy's sports bar (salut Eddy en passant! j'ai lu que étais revenu au Québec?). The apartment was a studio with all the furniture, an inversor that worked all the time and a pool. The owner, an English man, was very helpfull and was at the airport at my arrival to pick me up.
In the first days, I started to hang out in town to get to know it better, spot the colmados, the restaurants and the beach of course. I was looking for a job as waitress and I met a guy on the beach who intruced me to Linden at the Brittania bar. I had a short "interview" with Linden and Barbara (and Chanel their dog!) and I was hired at the bar. I was really amazed to get a job only 2 days after my arrival! Lucky I guess, but speaking 3 languages also helps. Working at this bar was really fun as the owners and Mel are so nice people, they became as a second family for me during my stay. As there is a lot of residents going at the Britt, I got to know a lot of people in Sosua and that's what is so fun: you walk in the street or go into a bar and there is always someone you know. I also got to know very well the staff of the Voodoo Lounge (Christy, Pipe, Trent, Luise, Mélanie, Anna...) and became good friend with them, which was very nice because there is not that much young people (except dominicans of course) living in Sosua.
I also took the time to visit a bit Rio San Juan (Laguna Grigri), Santo Domingo and Santiago (the Calle del Sol is is really worth it in my opinion), went out in Cabarete, took the conchos and the carros publicos. I became very good in Spanish and it really helped me not to be ripped off! Of course I've been robbed one time (a DVD player) but almost everyone I know has been, I guess it is part of the "experience". Finally I had to go back at the end of June as I have to finish my studies to be a police officer (maybe as Eddy I'll come back when I'll be a retired cop!). I was really sad to leave but there is unfortunately no real carrier opportunities in DR for young people.
One thing I did'nt like though is the fact that many foreigners who now live in DR have lost some sense of morality... Men (americans, canadians, english, whatever!) that could have been my father were always flirting with me and trying to get something from me... They probably would'nt do it in their own country, why do they allow themselves this kind of behavior in DR??! However, I really had the best time of my life, met wonderful people and had so much fun. I could have stayed for much longer, as this island is a little paradise!
Hope to see you again, I miss you all

Your Attitude About "Older" Men Flirting Is Just What Is Wrong With
Canadian,American, and some European women! You should be happy that they are paying attention to you.In the "Poorer" countriesw of the World, women look to older men as being more financially secure, and more ready to settleb down with one woman.A man who is ready to have, and take care of,a wife and their children. It is only in those First World Countries where a woman can earn as much as,or more than,a man is a woman able to just dismiss older men as potencial mates. If you are offended, you need to lighten up.In not too many years, you will be an "Older Woman" yourself, and longing for the attention of ANY man!
By the way,I am 30 years older than my Dominican wife!

Hola purefolie,
You won't remember me but my wife and I met you on one of your first days at the Britannia when we dropped in to give Barb our annual donation to Sosua Kids.
Nice report and I'm glad you had a generally good experience.

older men hitting on me
Hi Melissa you won't remember me either but myself (and my friend Angela who is Dominican) also met you at Brittania in April-May. I fail to see why you are so surprised that older men were hitting on you. Do you mean to say this has never happened at home?? Last time I looked Canadian men had eyes in their heads . You are a very pretty young lady and should be used to this attention by now & I would think that you would be more surprised if no one bothered. Young or old and no matter what nationality Men enjoy looking at pretty young women. Take it as the compliment it is meant as while you can. Age catches up to us all to soon and nothing compares with youth. lol.
Best of luck .

Melissa, great report. Best of luck with your police career. You made a great choice. 20 and out!! And I know you won't be the only the retired cop living in the DR.

Hey Melissa, Just thank god they look at you because you are beautiful and not because they find you ugly or because you are missing an arm.
Just take their money away by just blowing them kisses, but make sure you don't do it too sexy for you may cause them heart attacks.

Perhaps it is the bar you worked in that attracts a certain crowd? What exactly were they trying to get from you? This is a country where women like and prefer older men so maybe it is you that had the cultural misunderstanding?
