Ciguatera poisoning is caused by small reef fish eating a dinoflagelate carrying tetradoxidin. The small fish are eaten by bigger ones on the reefs. Some 500 different varieties are affected. Cooking does not destroy the poison. The antidote is Manitol, which is a simple sugar solution given as as injection. This reduces the brain swelling which is the reason for the strange symptoms (including reversal of hot/cold sensations) I became aware of ciguatera several years ago in Costambar when 23 people including the restaurant owner became very ill. Sometimes tourists get it & return home, & their doctor does not realize what the problem is. Tetradoxidin is one of the most poisonous chemicals known. Deep sea fish are not affected & are safe to eat. Reef fish are often poisonous. We do not eat fish at all when in the DR as the results can be devastating. by Canadian Bob

Thanks Miguel.

Ok that was very interesting MAR. But what is a reef fish and a deep sea fish? What are Red Snapper and Mero? Those are the only two I eat while in the DR.

BTW - does anyone know or have been to the restaruant I am referring to?

Did you eat anything from a colmado i.e. masita, galleticas, salami, or drank from a soda can without cleaning the lid? The colmados are hotbeds for mice. You are very lucky you are alive today. Many people have died from this.

Welcome back! I'm so glad you made it through all that and it's really interesting to hear that your insurance company will reimburse you the same as if you used an out of network physician. I didn't know they would do that. That's great info. Welcome home and I hope your next trip is a little less eventful! Great job on you first trip report!

Stodgord - I didn't eat anything from a colmado. Only two things I ate that day was the fish in Sosua and the baked chicken at home at night.

thanks suitelady79.

Mero is Sea Bass. Red Snapper is called Pargo in Spanish.

Really? I could have sworn Red Snapper was Chillo in Spanish.

I don't know where you ate, but I do know where you should have ate.

Leo's Banana towards the Charamicos side. Excellent fresh fish and Lobster at reasonable prices. No, I don't have any interest in this place, but I have been eating there for years.
