The mentality extends to the entire culture and makes it difficult - impossible in some cases - for young girls to go anywhere without a bodyguard. We travel quite a bit and my 17 year old daughter is very used to getting comfortable in a place and then venturing out to shop or eat by herself and practice her Spanish. She was unable to do this at all while we were there. Even in the small towns. Contrary to popular belief, this kind of attention is not a compliment and for women traveling it is indeed stressful.

I understand and appreciate what you are saying, but when Dominican boys/men are interested in your 17 year old daughter, I doubt it could be classified as part of the "sex trade".

Unless you and/or your daughter were somehow mistaken for hookers and propositioned by male tourists, I fail to see how the "sex trade" is the source of your stress.

I think that "Gail Morgan" was probably referring to the constant "I love yous" directed at her daughter.
Obviously, at many resorts, this sort of this is part of the game. However, some people do not like it and cannot seem to get the message across to these idiots.
I think if I were a parent of a young teenage girl i would walk the beach with a bat in order to get the message across..

Absolutely, and I do understand, but I felt that it was important to not refer to that sort of attention, as "the sex trade".

I was on a day trip to Puerto Plata with a British family and the couple in question was with their young daughter, I would say about 17 years old.
She was getting cat-called in the most filthy and disgusting ways wherever we went but they didn't notice at all because they spoke no spanish.
I have had the misfortune of having little 8 and 9 year-old boys say some horrible things to my novias right in front of me as if I wasn't there and it is downright annoying.
One little kid was actually whistling and throwing kisses at my novia while we were in the water on the beach. The kid was no more than 3 feet away from me and he just kept smiling at me, almost taunting me to react.
I put him in his place with a few choice words and he seemed very embarrased and afterwards stayed clear of us, but what I found strange was that his family were very close by and I know they saw the commotion but did absolutely nothing to over to see why I was yelling at him. Go figure.

We'll see.
I'll start with just a short entry to see if it survives.
the DR was beautiful, i went to Las Terrenas and Cabarate. And yet, it was really stressful.
I'll add more later, if this is not censored. And please, moderators, if you are deleting this, would you be so kind as to e-mail me to let me know what your censorship policy is? thanks.

You have left us all hanging here! We need more details to be able to comment.
It's not like only good things happen in the DR, so I'm sure it's alright to share your experience here without being deleted.
Tell us what was so horrible.

Man saying things to women is not only a Dominican man problem. I lived in Argentina for three years, and men did the same thing there. I should say that they are not as nasty as Dominicans. I am Dominican and I know how unpleasant Dominican man can be. I have heard them insulting women for not acknowledging their rude comments.

Middlemarie has not been here since May - doubtful she will update us, probably because of the way the thread went before it was cleaned up.
