Dancing in the Terrazo Caribe
I had a fabulous trip to Puerto Plata. I finally achieved my dream of dancing OFF the resort in the Dominican Republic.
I stayed Dec 7 -21 at the Playa Dorada complex Viva Wyndham.
First week rainy and overcast. But who cares, it's NOT cold and it's NOT snow. I'm not much of a beach bunny, I like to dance. I will pass on beach volleyball because I like to save myself for the dancefloor. And these days that sometimes requires an afternoon nap.
Excursion 1 - Terrazo Caribe -- the Initiation! Hosted by DR1's weather girl planner and her friends, I spent a wonderful night in a local Dominican establishment drinking rum, coke, and dancing merengue and bachata.
Watching planner dance salsa with her two salseros is very entertaining. They've been dancing together for ages and the dips, lifts and tricks are very advanced and some are quite dangerous so I know they have many years practice together to make it look so natural. Very nice! Very playful and creative dancers - Joelle, planner, Tony ... I liked the move where Tony dipped her to the floor and ... or nevermind!! You'll just have to see it for yourself with your own eyes!!
Excursion 2 - Ocean World's Bravissimo show and Casino. Beautiful show girls and dancing, stunning costumes and the excellent entertainment. I doubled my money in the casino. Tickets, drinks and $20 casino voucher generously donated to the Beyond the Beach Children's Foundation's Auction and won by Charlielyn who graciously invited me to join her.
Excursion 3 - Terrazo Caribe - Pa'chunga!
Excursion 4 - Terraza Caribe - The quiet before the storm
This was a quiet night out without a lot of dancing. Dominicans don't go out dancing on rainy nights.
Tropical Storm Olga started to build - I nervously watched the rain pelting down, winds increasing, palm trees bending. Watched a late night call-in show on the emergency chanel with 3 guys talking on cell phones to residents calling in from various parts of the country some anxiously inquiring about their families. Observed hotels guest dancing across the garden in the disco. Mindlessly consumed planners' chocolates. (Yes, planner there were more... )
Hotel staff were up cleaning and raking leaves, removing broken trees and branches before guests emerged from their rooms. For two days, the staff looked very nervous as they went about their jobs of serving the needs of the hotel guests and it was business as normal. The show went on with after dinner animation show on the first and second night. In Toronto, people call in and stay home at the first sign of snow. In the hotel, there was no evidence of low attendance. The house of weight room attendant brother was flooded and he was fortunate to evacuate to his sister's.
We had more rain but with out the winds, finally it stopped and the sun came out once again.
Excursion 5 - Rocky's in Sosua with two lovely ladies. Sorry I missed the man himself but I saw evidence of his elves at work.
Excursion 6 - Terrazo Caribe - El Volver
More dancing with the patrons of this local Dominican establishment with her friend from the USA.
Excursion 7- Terrazo Caribe - El Retorno
Excursion 8 - La Canita - El Cambio
First time here, took awhile to dance. Met a interesting tall slim transvestite in the ladies' washroom who told me I was very beautiful and he/she would like go to bed with me. I said thank you, but no -- you are la Reina here tonight. There was some kind of mutual admiration, I have to confess.
That pretty well sums up my trip. Ate on the Malecon, Portofino's, went to Billy's, watched the work of a Dominican hairdresser, did some shopping. I had a great vacation. I finally got to dance out side of an AI resort, thanks to planner and her friends.
I can't wait for my next trip and my return to Terrazo Caribe. June 4th would be a good date!
