ha! i've met that one legged hooker! She's actually very nice (not that i have any interest). And i know that really nice young guy with no legs. Speaks impecable english...and really is not too much of a begger. I'll buy him a beer or a slice of pizza...but its so sad that he is so intellegent but stuck in his condition.
But as far as the water. Why do people swear it is so dirty when I can have at least 20 feet of vision with my mask (calleta) on? THere was ONE time...i think in May when the water was sorta stagnant and had a little smell to it. But otherwise I've been swimming there for 10 years and have never had a problem. Sure...i tend to avoid the water on sundays when all the kids are in there (doing whatever they do do).
And if anything...the nightlife has become rather tame. There are two hooker bars...but the rest of the street is pretty quiet with lotsa euro familes hanging out.
THe vendors on the beach leave you alone after a couple of passes by.
I cant wait to go back!

Thanks for adding a different perspective on BC, Jrzyguy. The few times I have been at the beach in BC have always been enjoyable. I must say though, 49erman's comments about the water quality has caused me some concern.

boca chica
Boca chica is a convenient place to go to for the first night when coming in from Las Americas, but I don't stay long. As far as the hustle that is put on everyone on calle duarte, I've seen it more intense, back in 2000-2002. In Hipolito's era I think it was just as bad as it is now. I can take bc in small doses, but I have to move on pretty fast to Juan Dolio, or the north coast.

As always mentioned, Boca Chica is not for everyone. I always spend several nights in Boca Chica every visit to the DR. I like the mix of Santo Domingo and Boca Chica.
What harm can really be done spending a few hours in the water at Playa Boca Chica every month or so?

Bigbird...
it is the same article with very minor modifications. I have photos of Boca Chica(I was physically present) from early 1960's, 1996 and 2006. While I cannot vouch for the quality of the water at the microscopic level at other times, it was pretty clear when I was there. Writing about Boca Chica is a lot safer than writing about corruption, drugs(and the military) and the countless appointees(sin portafolio)in Dominican government. Does anyone really expect Boca Chica to be any different? Where are all the opportunities for education and meaningful employment for all the streetwalkers, hustlers, sankies and vendors? No need to reply, it's a rhetorical question. You who live there day-to-day know the answers already.

Thanks for the clarification.
From what little Spanish I understand the article actually deals with Andres and not the "Playa Boca Chica" being discussed in this thread.

Saying that Andres is worse does not negate the fact that Boca Chica beach is highly polluted, as clearly stated in those news articles I posted. They mention that the authorities have been warning about this for decades, but some people have selective hearing and in your case, selective vision.
