Safe 4 week journey with 3 year old
We have recently returned from DR after four week holidays. Despite some warnings on this website we rented a 4WD car and covered over 2000 kms without even a minor accident. Coming from ex communist european country the roads seemed OK, though the potholes sometimes were terrible. Dominicans drive OK with one exception i.e. multilane roads. Then it is chaos. Probably the worst driving experience was getting into Santo Domingo in the rain. Other than that I do recommend driving as a way to escape AI resorts who deceive tourists into tours they do not need to take by magnifying the dangers out of proportions. We stayed for couple of days in 500 room AI resort and despite over 1000 guests we were one of the few who rented cars. We did the easy going route Punta Cana - Santo Domingo - Cabarete - Samana - Punta Cana. If you have anye questions PM me.
