Here you go! Look at "How to apply" or " The FAQ" form the menu on the left.

And a very good link it is. I've saved it in case someone asks for it in future.

I think scandall is kind of kidding around because one of hillbilly's rules is that they should already have a visa to travel.

While the link at the US Embassy may provide a list of things you need to do to apply for a visa, this is not the same thing as what the US requires someone to have as qualifications to actually be granted such a visa. Those qualificationsa are not published anywhere that I have been able to find. It was explained to me that the list of qualifications is not published to avoid fraud by those applying for visas.

The truth of the matter is that the people fill out the forms, pay the money, wait some time, and get a NO answer. It is very sad and frustrating. But the real reason behind the no answer is that the US does not trust Dominicans to return home to the DR when the visa time is up.

Does anyone have any experience were someone not sponsored by a family member already living in the US has gotten a visitors visa in the past few years?

Just realize that 99.9% of the time you will pay a fee, wait forever and they will say no. This good friend have property a lot of money in the bank, etc? If not you are wasting the money. I think it is over $100 as well.

Here's a link to a thread where someone (kelly2) had success.

Visitor's Visa

There may be other success stories but I don't remember seeing them.

I don't believe the wait for the appointment or for the answer takes too long. I believe it's only a few weeks for the former and immediately (especially if the answer is no) for the latter.

The emphasis being the answer will be no. They should screen these applicants and say no for $10 since this is a mean way to collect money.
