Yes you are right they fly to Brussels, but they are very cheap. And then we could get a cheap flight to Stanstead which is closer to where I want to be in UK and no flights there from MAdrid. But my husband managed to transit Madird without Schengen visa as I have explained so maybe they do the same in Brussels??? Or maybe they do have a transit area??

Sounds like it only works if you fly all the way with the same airline.

Exactly. I guess that transit without visa through Madrid was done with Iberia flights both SD-Madrid and Madrid-UK?
You might look whether Jetairfly (Belgian TUI/Thomsonfly really) is in an alliance with an airline flying to London from Brussels, and whether it would work that way, but I doubt it.

Some check-in clerks speak Spanish because when I used to travel with my Dominican passport they used to speak in Spanish to me no matter how much I tried using the little French I know hehe.

Btw, thanks for the info about the visas when I asked about it in my mom's name.

miesposo's sister travelled to UK via france recently and she did not mention any problems with immigration.

In my experience, I've never got an answer to any e-mails I've sent the Spanish consulate (or is it the embassy you go and apply for visas, residencia, etc.? I confuse that term with the house of the ambassador), but I used to get quick answers from their Cultural Center.

Visa info from MAEC:
Requirements: Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperación | Gobierno de España

and

Visa types: Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperación | Gobierno de España

Info about the consulate and the embassy
Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperación | Gobierno de España
Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperación | Gobierno de España

About Madrid Barajas:
Aena.es - Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aerea - Madrid-Barajas

If the AENA link doesn't work, go to aena.es and choose the airport on the drop down list at the top left.

Hope it helps. All the links are in Spanish btw.

The London embassy when you click on the Visa tab takes you to some advertising page via a popup, even though supposedly blocked. Madrid Airport doesn´t have a page of its own , it is operated by some commercial company who only give you information about external to airport contacts. I think we´ll be better off telephoning Puerto Plate to see if they have any spare seats on a charter flight!

btw, we got back from holidays, no problems at the border, i was never separated from miesposo at madrid's airport (he had to stand in a different line for a passport control but that was just meters aways from my line). in schengen area no problems at all (we travelled through 4 schengen states) except for armed police in all trains going to austria (for the duration of euro games and before austria has lifted schengen agreement and increased border control).
