Bjnissa,

My husband flew from POP to Montreal and then to Toronto last month. So he had to go through Immigration in Montreal. He said it was no problem. He gave them one of the "8" extra photos from the application and they used that for his PR card.
I moved from the time we sent in our application till he arrived so I made sure he had our exact address - which he had to write out for them so they can mail the PR card.

He had the customs form filled out declaring all his belongings and she didn't even take it from him. So of course my husband thought I was crazy to have stressed about getting it filled out properly before he left lol.

The Immigration officer told my husband that he cannot leave the country until he receives his PR card (approx. 6 weeks). She filled out a landing paper which you need to keep as this will be your proof that you are a Permanent Resident and crossed out the visa in his passport.

I don't think there was much more to it than that. He didn't say anything else about it

Joanna - Did your husband get the extra photos back when he picked up his Passport?? Or did he have them with him? Or was it in the Visa for Immigration????? I know so many questions!
I took an extra copy of the Canada Customs forms on my last flight back and am going to fill it out for him and fax it tomorrow so he can use it to fill his own out. It was driving me crazy thinking how I could help him with that form. But after re-reading it I was thinking the same that they probably wouldn't even bother with it once he got to customs.
What about sigining up for Health Care and his SIN number? Did they give you info on that?

Hi Lexi.

Your husband will go through immigration with no problem. My husband got most of his pics back. Your husband will be given a package welcoming him to Canada. In there you will find an application for the SIN number. You will have to take him to the closet govt office to apply for that. He will get a SIN number right away, but you will have to wait for the card. The Health care is a different story. In Ontario new immigrants have to wait 3 months before they can have Health coverage by the Province. We had to get private medical insurance to cover my husband for the 3 month waiting period. I am not sure what Province you are from so you might want to check into that.

I know you want to make the Airport experience the easiest for him. They will take good care of him. It will all be new to him, but he will do just fine knowing you are waiting on the other side of the door for him.

Keep smiling.
Sandy

Hey Lexi,

I will have to ask him...I'm thinking he got them back with the application when he picked up his visa. I'm not sure if someone told him to bring those photos for Immigration or if he just thought it would be a good idea.

As Sandy mentioned he will receive a booklet of information when he goes through Immigration. It has some information regarding settling and services. The SIN card is easy. Just bring the landing paper and passport and here we got the number instantly and the card came in the mail in about 2 weeks.
With the paper with his SIN number and landing paper and passport he was able to open a bank account.
I am also in Ontario so we had to purchase insurance to cover him for the first 3 months. For Health Care - at least in Ontario - you have to provide proof that you will be residing in that province. i.e. a utility bill, a bank statement, rent/mortgage with their name and the address on it.

The CIC website does have some links to other information and was definitely helpful in finding where all these offices are located in the before you arrive and after your arrive (I'm sure you've probably checked if you already have the CSBA form )

I wasn't near as worried about Immigration as I was about him checking his bags in POP and having someone try and tell him that his bags were overweight and he would have to pay lol.
And I kept telling him to not get distracted going through security because they might try and take some of his money.
I think I had him a little stressed so I wrote him an email with detailed information explaining that as he was travelling on an Immigration Visa he would get extra baggage allowance and what that was so not to let anyone tell him he has to pay, be careful going through security and make sure you keep an eye on your things.

Considering it was all so simple I'm sure he thought I was crazy for worrying so much

Default Saskatchewan

When my husband came in July, he flew West Jet Toronto- Clagary - Saskatoon. he went through immigration in Toronto with no probelms. He did not have a photo with him, and no one asked for one. He reived his PR card in the mail in about 3 weeks with a photo on it, so they must have them some where. He reived his SIN number at the gov't building the following day. health care in Saskatchewan is a little different. We applied for health care as soon as he got here, until he card adn number arrrived I paid for him to see the doctor one time ( will be reimbursed by Sask Health) he then recieved his card and number within 3 weeks, not a long wait at all. He had no trouble with immigration or customs at the airport. He was given a form that he had to fax in the gov't building did all that for us.
