Hurricanes in DR

Is it a bad idea to study in DR from August to December because of the hurricane season? How common are hurricanes and how bad are they? Should I wait until the Spring semester? How big of a concern are hurricanes in Santiago?

A very small concern. Santiago is just about one of the safest places considering hurricanes.

Believe me JC the storms in the UK and USA are by far a lot worse than anything in the DR. You will be quite safe.

Most of the native do get upset by small wind, I was in Licey it rained, the next day a 15-20 wind hit some plantain fell over, it was not the wind it was that the roots were dead from a lack of rain. I have never seen a hurricane go further than 100 miles inland here, due to the mountain ranges.
