Default Early September

Hi, I am planning on visiting Punta Cana (Bavaro Princess....I dont know if that helps with exact location) from Sept 8 - Sept 15, 2007. Does anyone know what the likelihood of a hurricane is? (I am not AT ALL weather smart, so I dont understand all those pictures and stuff...lol).
I would really appreciate if someone could help me out. I am still trying to decide whether or not I will come to the DR as I am afraid of the hurricanes.
Also, I have heard that hurricanes there are very minor....is this true? I dont want to come on vacation and be hurt/killed in the process!!!

Hurricanes usually don't reach that part of the Island.

I think you will be fine and have a great trip! If you are that concerned, avoid travelling in hurricane season.

In the event of an "emergency", your tour operator would get you out of the destination.

There is an excellent hurricane thread on here and these days we do, fortunately, have very good warning of tropical storms and hurricanes which may be approaching so plenty of time to prepare for any problems. Although there are no crystal balls available you should be pretty safe during your visit so just enjoy yourself and don'tworry too much.

so I am starting to think that I will just brave it and go! I am assuming that in the rare event that we do have a hurricane the hotel staff/management will have evacuation procedures in place, am I right?
If anyone has any details on whether or not a hurricane is possible in the second week of September please let me know!
Also, how far is the airport from Punta Cana (just in case there is a warning and we want to fly home early).
Thanks!

I can understand your concern as I would have felt similarly before I came to live here but, to be fair, full blown hurricanes are very rare here so don't worry too much..... I know it sounds scary but I am scared of snakes and tarantulas also but they don't visit every day.

OK, this is kinda accurate and kinda inaccurate Probability of hurricanes is overall low. Punta Cana area is higher on the list of low probabilities... Clear?

Reputable Hotels have good hurricane plans in place. I would not cancel the vacation because it is in the peak of hurricane season. Just understand that there is a probability, but it is low. And if a hurricane does decide to visit when you are here, you will be in good hands.

Here is a quote from the hurricane preparedness plan that I draw up each year for DR1 members.

For Tourists and Visitors
The hotels situated on the coastal areas of the DR have experience with preparing for hurricanes. Let your friends and family know that http://www.dr1.com/status/index.shtml has up to date information about the status of hotels. You can be of help by assisting the staff to carry out the preparedness plan. In certain cases, you will be evacuated. Most Dominican hotels have already lived through the effects of a hurricane and by now are most likely to have a rehearsed hurricane preparedness plan.

Here is the complete plan if you want to read it. http://www.dr1.com/forums/514432-post1.html

Have a good vacation!
