The power came back at about 9 pm here in Higuey.
No rain for now, but there was a light drizzle earlier tonight.
Phones are operational.

I kept listening to radio news all evening long, things are bad in the South and there are some communities in Cibao that are cut away from the rest of the world. The bridge on Autopista Duarte, fortunately, didn't fall down (yet) let's hope it won't.

Also, there is a general consensus that the local weather service should work better than it did this time with warnings - they issued storm and flood warnings this morning, when most of the country was already without power, and thus incommunicated. Kudos to Z 101 FM that kept the nation informed about development everywhere, from 5 am till 12 midnight. They will continue with special programming tomorrow (Tuesday) morning starting at 5 am again so anybody that is interested in detailed reports of what when where is welcome to tune in. You can also listen online La Z 101

A member in one of the posts above has family in Higuey and is concerned.
Can you describe the situation there for their benefit, please?

Well, it's pretty calm around here. I live in downtown so here it is calm, I don't know about all of the barrios, but I did visit couple of people today in different parts of Higuey and everything seemed OK.

The rain stopped earlier today, but there was some light drizzle at about 9 pm, it's still wet by no rain. There is no wind and so far I have not heard about any accidents here or anything serious happening.

During the last hurricane (Dean) when there were rocks thrown at Malecon in SDQ here in Higuey it was calm with no winds again and very little rain. Same happened this time, no winds here (some very light winds maybe) but there was some serious rain Saturday and Sunday, today only some drizzle.

Unless the family lives very near the river or other water source, I wouldn't worry much.

If you cannot get through on the phone, PM me the phone number and I will check for you here locally.

Default For Emee34

Thanks Rubio.
That's exactly what Emee34 needed in the way of Higuey info.

With regards to Moca, Emee, as I suspect you do not speak Spanish and can't read those links that Lambada posted, let me give you the gist of it.
Many homes, somewhere from 600 to 1,000 in the greater Moca area, have been flooded and the occupants evacuated.
This does not mean they are flooded like in the New Orleans Katrina disaster with people sitting on rooftops waiting for rescuing.
This means that they live in lowlands and that enough water came into the house that it was unlivable and they had to go stay with friends and/or relatives until it subsides.
As well, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities in that area.

Hi there all. Thanks for all the updates - its times like this when you realise how great it is to be a member of a site like this! Just to let you know hubby spoke to his parents last night and they are fine but had gone out to rescue his grandparents who live about an hour away and have lost parts of their house - not sure exactly how bad it is at the moment but they've taken them home to their house in SD anyway. Not sure eactly where they live but I do know it's somewhere near one of the bridges that broke - hubby's parents had to go a long way round to get them. Anyway, they're all safe now. I hope you're all doing ok?!

Still raining then? Has the wind died down at all? You're up and about early this morning!

Misty light drizzle here in Sosua and the Sat pix still showing that we might be through with this by the end of the day, although it seems to have slowed down and I expected it to be farther West by now.
