Headlines on the CNN site report only 11 deaths. I'm hearing today up to 40. I'm surprised at the (in)accuracy of CNN.

Someone asked in an earlier post about news coverage. I ranted a day or 2 ago that local & national news gave the storm about 20 seconds of coverage, but Britney and Paris get 5+ minutes. Shows the priorities or preoccupations of US. Yesterday, CNN was doing a much better job of covering the storm and its effects.

This morning, a local (Las Vegas TV) weatherperson commented on the potential effects on Florida coastline "for those of us with friends and relatives there." She didn't even mention the destruction done on Hispaniola and other Caribbean islands. Does anyone ever imagine we might have friends & relatives outside US borders - like in the DR, or Cuba, etc?

Thanks to DR1 and its posters, at least we get up-to-date, first-hand reports! Thanks for continuing to post current links.

So sorry to hear aid efforts aren't being felt or seen in so many areas. My prayers continue. Like many of our own politicians do during crises, I did see that Leonel made a well-publicized visit to one of the areas most affected. Is he just visiting? Or actually offering assistance? Curious.

Have heard a report there could be a million persons with serious problems to return to their homes once the worst is over. Apparently we will experience the result of what happens when hundreds of thousands move into vulnerable areas, with the authorities looking the other way. Now these people are homeless, many just with the clothes they have on, but thankful to have saved their lives. This is also about the rampant poverty coming to the open in this country that can fool anyone with all its high rise towers and luxury suvs. Maybe this should be the time the government comes to grip with this problem. The studies showing which are the vulnerable areas are available. Will all these people be allowed to return to these areas, or will lessons be learned? These are also times for solidarity with those that are affected.

Juan Dolio cloudy morning with no electricity for about an hour. Then about 10 mins of sun. Hooray!!! Then yet another storm. It rained for about two hours and has just stopped. All of the local branches of the PLD - hundreds of people, are out helping the worst affected areas.

i know you guys are in a hit where we been very lucky over here,but a 1 million of people loosing here homes would be a very big number, even counting all country sides areas together, or does that number relate to the Dominican and Haitian side together?

Is there another depression on the way? Can't find anything on the internet, but here in Puerto Plata seems like people are in panic, banks closed early and also verizon had an order to close their office here at 3 pm.

The number came from someone close to a third party working with government rescue forces. The flooding is getting to more poor people than was initially assumed. Probably because the rains have continued. I do not know if it is for Hispaniola, but it meant that this is a problem of a major social magnitude.

More on this should be known later this evening. I am optimistic the government will be able to tackle the situation, given the positive experience had when dealing with restoring the country after Hurricane Georges in 1998.
