We just managed to get through to my husbands family and they are fine - the house phone is down but we got through on the mobile. Our thoughts are now with those who have lost their homes etc. We are praying for you right now. x

If this is accurate, it doesn't look good for the next couple of days.

Good news... official reports from INDRHI are that if the rains continue to diminish, the danger of the overflowing of the dams will be behind us. Most critical areas are: Bajo Yuna, the area known as population areas below the Yuna River that runs from the northeast, and the Sabana Yegua Dam, fed by Yaque del Sur River in the southwest.

The good news about the tropical wave is that it is moving at a normal speed (23mph), contrary to Tropical Storm Noel that seemed to take forever to move on (6mph).

We've just been down the Malecón, to the floating bridge, to Villa Duarte and the bridges over the Ozama - photos to follow soon. Speaking to some policemen by the seafront, they said "this is worse than Georges".

More rain about to hit Juan Dolio, its gone very dark again and the wind is getting up. Looking at the satellite I can see this lasting a couple more days, every time a blb seems to go another one takes its place! Electric still on but cable has been off since Sunday so no TV. Another happy night playing dominos.

Clinica Cruz Jiminian in Santo Domingo has a collection center for clothing, blankets, beds, canned food. Padre Rogelio is gathering to take to his community in the Bajo Yuna (El Limon, Villa Riva, Arenoso), that is fully covered by flooded river waters, a major northeast rice production area.

For unusable streets & highways check here:

For pictures of San Francisco de Macoris:

There are reports of unofficial death toll 100+

For windrifter (Elizabeth) asking about Sabanata de Yasica - yes the low lying area near the river always gets the worst of it & this time is no exception. There is flooding but people can still get out and about in the town.
Puerto Plata Digital

For everyone: there was a rather nasty video on You Tube of two Channel 11 reporters (TV) reporting on the floods and getting roughed up by the military when they were clearly only doing their job. I was going to put the link up (it was on both remolacha & sacandomelao blogs). Unfortunately I now can't because it appears to have been taken down (from You Tube). If anyone can find it - please post. It was called Galleta de Militar a Reportero del canal 11.

Default numbers rise on MSNBC

"In the Dominican Republic, more than 50,000 people were driven from their homes and nearly 12,000 homes were damaged, while mudslides and swollen rivers have isolated 36 towns, said Dominican emergency services spokesman Luis Luna Paulino. He said 41 people were killed and 20 were missing."

This is a revision on the MSNBC site I posted earlier. And yes, I think some reports are combining Haiti with DR, and some are including Jamaica.
