According to clavedigital.com, the lower part of the city of Santiago is flooded after they opened the gates of the Taveras dam!!! there's hundreds of families awaiting to be rescued, some on roofs and there's rumors of people on top of trees waiting to be rescued by helicopters.

Turn on Channel 29. Dramatic videos of flooding in Santiago..
At least 4 deaths so far in the city.

The Authorities have admitted that at 500 meters per second there is flooding, and they revealed that they let go 5000 meters per second for an hour at least...

This meant that Santiago saw more flooding than during Hurricanes David and Federico...

Really bucketing it down now in Santo Domingo. Maybe it's just as well there was no school.

Cabarete
Just talked to a friend in Cabarete center.
She reports that things are 'okay' and no obvious major damage in center of town, just some clean up to be done. She reports there is electricity, but confirms no internet for the moment. I asked about the condition of the beach itself and she didn't indicate major changes to amount or distribution of sand (surprises me).

She did confirm as conjectured last night that Marabu is in her words 'gone'. That would be the tent style roof & most of the glass walls.

Wow, this is horrible. I am very close to these places at the moment which are submerged under water. My office is in downtown and yet I couldn't imagine a disaster like this. Where I live, I only have fallen leaves from the trees but this disaster is simply incredible.

In Puerto Plata this morning I am told most of the city is without electricity and were so all night. Most people with invesors have now run out of back up power as well. Hopefully we will hear from more locals later on.

The streets are littered with debris, some trees down, flooding in many parts of the city. I did not venture too far looking to see how bad it was. I will post anything more I find out later. At the office I am doing work for, 1/2 the employees have not come in to work yet.

A friend emailed me a few minutes ago with her comments from her drive to work in Cofresi this morning, (she was coming from Torre Alta in Puerto Plata) :

Here's a few things I saw on my way to work this morning, big trees snapped
and laying in the street. The sign at Sunix, (across from hospital in Puerto Plata) the one that tells the pump price, looks like it was run over by a roller used to pave the roads, most of the signs, no parking, no U turn etc. are all the same, laying on the sidwalk, completely bent over from the wind. There are billboards that look like accordians and many are missing. The Oceanworld sign is okay, and there are still many posters for Antony Santos and Frank Reyes on poles.

Did you see the area between the entrances to Torre Alta where Leonel has
half a dozen billboards, luckily, only one was up, but it too is not longer
attached to the new brick wall. Manhole covers are missing all over the
place. Didn't see any real signs of much flooding though.
