And yet another report which says that the dam was NOT at the point of collapsing - this one by civil engineer Ramón I. Rodríguez. He also says that the dam should have been kept at a lower level before TS Olga arrived. Which takes us back to SantiagoDR's question: Why was it kept so high? The profit motive over safety issues?

It looks like there was a lot less rain than Dominican authorities claim.
According to NASA it was only a third part of the amount.

I see there is a comment on dam 'maintenance' in Hoy. While the President was receiving an honorary degree at the Naval Academy yesterday, he appears to have said that the dams haven't been dredged since 1979.' 'Hemos vistos que nuestras presas pueden desbordarse y parte de eso tiene que ver con la sedimentación que se acumula en el tiempo y sabemos que en la presa de Tavera, que acaba de tener en estos momentos una situación trágica lamentable, todavía hay escombros desde la época del huracán David, en 1979', advirtió el gobernante.'

If only we could harness into electricity all the hot air spoken in Congress, the Senate & by Government officials, we wouldn't need dams at all.

Can we open a betting book as to what the NEXT excuse/denial will be? ~ Grahame.

Lambada: The Prez is correct. In fact the lake has never been dredged to my knowledge. There was a program to reforest most of that watershed to reduce the amount of sediments that flows into the lake with every rain. Way back when, there were reports of a much shortened life span for the Tavera Dam and its hydroelectric production.

It would be a great project for some government.

You get the feel you're re-inventing the wheel here! Another great project would be keeping a list of missing persons when relatives have reported them as such. Would you believe...........they DON'T do it?

It is probably a foregone conclusion that heads aren't going to roll for this gaffe, assuming that all the initial info we have is confirmed to be correct.

Sadly Mr C's prediction is becoming a reality.

I'm the first to admit that the government of the Dominican Republic leaves a lot to be desired.....but there comes a point were criticism turns into just plain ugly bashing.
